Newly engaged couple Dan Rookwood and Sam Parlane celebrate with a glass of bubbles on Cecil Peak.
Australian journalist Dan Rookwood was celebrating with his new fiancé Sam Parlane last week in Queenstown after proposing to her atop Cecil Peak. They were flown up with Over the Top Helicopters.
In his own words Dan describes the proposal...
“Over the Top flew us up in one of their helicopters to Cecil Peak and we landed in bright sunshine and a foot of snow. So I carried Sam across to the ledge overlooking the lake. She thought the flight was a belated birthday present until, to her surprise, I dropped to one knee and produced the ring. She kept me waiting for what seemed like minutes but was only five seconds of shock before saying yes.
At that point the pilot brought over a bottle of bubbles which we chilled in the snow as we drank in the picture-perfect views before flying back down to earth through cloud nine.
We spent the rest of the day eating and drinking - first at Amisfield for lunch which segued into dinner at InSpire. We rounded the evening off at Barmuda in front of a roaring outdoor fire before returning to our villa at Azur Lodge which looks out on to the very ledge where I popped the question.
There were a lot of local people involved in making our day very special and I cannot thank them enough. Queenstown is just ridiculously stunning and we look forward to returning again and again to somewhere that will always hold a special place in our hearts.”
