Get your’elves along

Santa’s sleigh bells are ringing early and the festive mood is almost upon us. Preparations for the 75th Anniversary Farmers Santa Parade are well underway and volunteers are being sought to help on one of the most popular and special days of the year.

The Farmers Santa Parade has delivered joy to Auckland families since 1934 and this year’s event will be the biggest, brightest and boldest yet. Santa will make his way through our big little city on Saturday 30 (rain date 7 December).

Each year the Farmers Santa Parade relies on volunteers to make the parade a success. Organisers are currently looking for energetic & enthusiastic people who are willing to get dressed up in costume and can help out in the parade.

The streets come alive during this iconic event with everything from dancers to clowns to float drivers to Santa’s helpers. The Farmers Santa Parade is a special event in our region and is loved by hundreds of thousands of Aucklanders who really get into the spirit of the season.

“This year is the 75th Anniversary of the Farmers Santa Parade. We’re looking for fun-loving volunteers who can help out in the parade and behind the scenes. You must be willing to have a good time and help make the day special for all,” says parade organiser Pam Glaser.

“We have some people who’ve been involved for a few decades and some families who come along for the first time – everyone is welcome. This year should be extra special and we’ve got some special surprises for the 75th Anniversary.

Behind the scene volunteers must be older than 18 years and willing to help as marshals, banner carriers, costume minders and the like. Pam is also looking for people of all ages to be part of the parade and dress in fantasy costume. Volunteers are required from about 11am on the day and will be free to go from about 4pm.

The Parade starts on the corner of Mayoral Drive and Cook Street before heading down Queen Street to Customs Street and then up Albert Street to the corner of Wellesley Street.

“The Farmers Santa Parade has been an iconic event in the Auckland calendar for three-quarters of a century. This year Auckland’s kids can expect a procession of fantasy floats, terrific costumes and colourful characters,” Pam says.

“We hope you can help us with this special event.”

Fittings for parade costumes take place in the school holidays from 29 September to 1 October and 8 October - 10 October
