The very best of New Zealand film and television was celebrated at a glamorous red carpet awards ceremony at Auckland's historic Civic Theatre tonight.

This year's Awards follow the merger of the New Zealand Screen Awards and the New Zealand Television Awards.

Screen Directors Guild of New Zealand executive director and organising committee member, Anna Cahill, said the Awards proved themselves to be the biggest two days of the year for New Zealand film and television.

Yesterday, a Craft Awards lunch was held to celebrate the achievements of those providing the expertise and support needed to make the industry thrive. More than 21 categories were awarded at the lunch-time ceremony with the remaining 37 categories awarded tonight.

"The Awards are a spectacular showcase of the very best of New Zealand talent and work and confirm that our film and television industries are thriving more than ever before. 77 judges spent more than 900 hours judging more than 660 entries this year."

New Zealand Television Broadcasters' Council chief executive and organising committee member, Rick Friesen, said by combining the Awards the bar has been raised across the film and television industries.

"With 58 television, documentary, news and current affairs categories and 170 finalists the Awards reflect what it takes to sustain and grow an internationally competitive industry."
