Big Day Out 2009 First Announcement
Big Day Out 2009 First
Announcement
With the global economy on the brink of collapse, what better time to ask people to hand over their hard earned money to escape the world for a day.
And who better to prove to you that investing in music is safer and returns much more than banks any day: the man who has seen it all, Neil Young.
This is a proud moment for BDO. After 17 years of producing the most dynamic, entertaining and challenging event we possibly can, this year’s shows promise to stand out from all others.
From the dynamic sounds of Arctic Monkeys or the lush depth of TV on the Radio to the wealth of great local talent or the welcome return of the Prodigy, the world’s biggest traveling circus will be once again back on the road next January.
But before we get to the good stuff, here’s some important info:
In an effort to ensure our tickets are available to genuine punters at the price we have set, there will be a ticket purchase limit of four per customer. Every customer will need to read and agree to our Conditions of Sale and Admission before they can purchase tickets. These conditions can be viewed on our website and will also be displayed in all agencies and outlets.
And this year we have changed ticketing agents and outlets. Ticketmaster is our new ticketing partner. Tickets will be available from www.bigdayout.com and Ticketmaster – on-line at www.ticketmaster.co.nz, by phone 0800 111 999 and at Ticketmaster outlets, including Real Groovy.
So come and join us for a just one day. We hope the first announcement will satisfy your musical needs, but for those who need more there will be a second announcement in November...
BIG DAY OUT is honoured to announce the arrival of one of those rare modern musicians for whom the term “legend” is more under than over-statement: NEIL YOUNG. At a prolific phase of his 40-year-plus career, YOUNG is leading his band through eclectic set lists, picking from 2008’s Chrome Dreams II, delving into classics like Hey Hey, My My, and venting his activist’s spleen on Let’s Impeach the President. Witness the many faces of a true rock icon, NEIL YOUNG at BIG DAY OUT 2009.
Smack my BIG DAY OUT up! It’s the one, the only, the original, THE PRODIGY, back for BDO No.4. The British pioneers of crash-bang-boom rocktronica will be armed with a brand new album (due in February), and the same old fierceness. After leaving festival fields littered with blown minds all across the European summer, Liam, Maxim and Keith are in rare form. What’s the new stuff like? Liam Howlett has dropped the words “mad”, “buzzing”, “on fire” and “fresh”. You could take his word for it, or just get it straight in yo’ face when THE PRODIGY invade BIG DAY OUT 2009.
I bet that ARCTIC MONKEYS look good on the BIG DAY OUT stage...'cos that's exactly where they'll be this summer, inspiring a frenzy of indie dancing as they whip out tunes from their world-beating albums, Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not and Favourite Worst Nightmare. But wait, there's more – it appears the lads have decamped to the Californian desert to begin laying down album No.3… with none other than Queens of the Stone Age's Josh Homme manning the desk. The rock'n'roll mind boggles at what they'll come up with. Be first in the world to hear the results when Sheffield's own ARCTIC MONKEYS reveal all at BIG DAY OUT.
Manchester duo THE TING TINGS are here to put the spunk in the summer and the buzz in BIG DAY OUT. The biggest noisemakers of the past year, Katie White and Jules De Martino scored a knock-out with a one-two punch of alt-pop perfection in the shape of singles Great DJ and That’s Not My Name. Next came an instant UK No.1 album in We Started Nothing, and live shows best described by NME as “short, sharp and perfectly formed”. All proof that that THE TING TINGS have definitely started something. But what, exactly? Find the answer at BIG DAY OUT.
They won’t fit in any musical pigeonholes, but New York five-piece TV ON THE RADIO are a perfect fit for BIG DAY OUT. Drawing on post-rock, gospel, new wave and deep dub, TVOTR have won critical praise and defied preconceptions. Their third album, the spanking new Dear Science, has already been declared an “art-rock symphony”. Owners of a spellbinding, combustible live show, the Brooklyn boys of TVOTR will set BIG DAY OUT 2009 alight.
After eleven years playing to the world with bands Salmonella Dub, Shapeshifter and Concord Dawn, TIKI TAANE embarked on his solo career in January 2007. An acclaimed musician in his own right Tiki has pushed the boundaries of his own creativity with a fearless and innovative musical mélange of reggae, dub, rock and pop on his debut top ten album Past Present Future which featured the singles "Tangaroa", "Now This Is It" and the number 1 “Always on my Mind”. See Tiki bring the new dawn and the new sound when he storms the stage at this Big Day Out.
We couldn’t help it; we had an evil urge to
throw MY MORNING JACKET into the BIG DAY OUT 2009
mix. This Kentucky five-piece has graduated from barely-kept
indie secret to mainstay status at US festivals like
Bonnaroo Coachella, and will even play Madison Square Garden
this New Year’s Eve. Their 2008 album, Evil Urges,
continued an unfettered string of critical acclaim, while
mixing funk, falsetto and prog into their classic rock
cocktail. “I need a human by my side,” frontman Jim
James sings on the new album. Do him a solid and keep MY
MORNING JACKET company at BIG DAY OUT.
Ready…Aim… Scream! The “best British band to
emerge in years”(thanks, Q mag), Welsh metal-core heroes
BULLET FOR MY VALENTINE are bringing their
in-your-face aural assault to this summer’s BIG DAY OUT.
On their second album, Scream Aim Fire, BFMV are, frontman
Matt Tuck says, “Better, fresher, harder and more real”.
Damn right. Newly minted Best British Band at the 2008
Kerrang! Awards, BULLET FOR MY VALENTINE are a powerful
voice of a new metal generation. Join the chorus at BIG DAY
OUT 2009.
Big Day Out 09 will see HEADLESS CHICKENS return to the stage after a ten year hiatus. Possibly the most challenging chart-topping local act of the nineties, the Chickens produced a string of hits on both sides of the Tasman including Cruise Control, Donde Esta La Pollo, Gaskrankenstation, Juice, Mr Moon and the NZ number one George. An enormously popular touring act with a flamboyant live show, Headless Chickens built a huge fanbase in Australia and on home soil. After a decade away, the group that saw its way through tragedy (the suicide of founding member Johnny Pierce) and triumph (their NZ number one George remains the only chart-topping song for their legendary label Flying Nun), is now back to strut around the farmyard in their own inimitable style.
Hailing from windy city Wellington, THE BLACK SEEDS’ fusion of dub, funk, soul and classic reggae has been the much-loved soundtrack to many a Kiwi’s sun-drenched summer. Formed back in 1997, The Black Seeds have secured a gold album, two double-platinum albums and built a masterful 8-piece live show, rightly regarded as one of New Zealand’s finest. After signing record deals with European labels Sonar Kollectiv and Rough Trade in 2007, The Black Seeds successfully released their 3rd album Into the Dojo in the same year. It was received in Europe to critical acclaim and wide airplay, followed by their third and most successful European tour in the summer of 07. 2008 has seen The Seeds return to their home-pod to create more tunes to toast to, and they have just released their 4th studio album. It’s a cracker and so are they.
Back in 1997, a young Cambridge band by the name of Trinket won the local radio station's Battle of the Bands. Another win in 1999, and a change of name to THE DATSUNS, set wheels in motion for what is now one of New Zealand’s hottest international rock acts. Playing packed venues amongst the cobbled streets of London Town saw the band sign with the V2 label in 2002. The release of their self-titled debut album won them numerous accolades such as NME's Best Live Band and New Zealand Music Awards 'Best Album', 'Best Group' and 'Breakthrough Artist'. Two follow up albums (Outta Sight, Outta Mind 2004 and Smoke & Mirrors 2006) and several European tours later, The Datsuns give us fourth album Head Stunts. Last igniting the Big Day Out stage in 2004, we are proud to welcome home The Datsuns for an electrifying round two. Warning: it might be loud.
Who’s gonna play ghetto-tech to the indie kids? Acid to the housed-up hordes? Who’s gonna put the psychedelic wobbliness and the electro sci-fi in BIG DAY OUT 2009? Get ready to dance your arse off, ’cos the answer is… SIMIAN MOBILE DISCO. London lads James Ford and Jas Shaw make “good, old fashioned, analogue party music”. You may have heard it on 2007’s sweaty, dirty, catchy-as-hell album Attack Decay Sustain Release. What’s for sure is that it made you move. So get a move on – to SIMIAN MOBILE DISCO at BIG DAY OUT 2009.
After six years, sixty thousand records, a Tui for Best Group, 10 hit singles, and hundreds of gigs, ELEMENO P have become one of New Zealand’s premiere pop rock acts. 2007 saw the band road-tripping their catchy tunes off shore, driving 6000 miles through the U.S.A, and sharing a sure-to-have-been-stinky tour bus through Europe with fellow Kiwis Steriogram. Fresh from their world jaunt, the band headed for the studio to produce their third album, simply called Elemeno P. Infectious first single Baby C’mon raced up the NZ airplay charts, got adopted by a friendly neighbourhood phone company and was nominated as a finalist for the APRA Silver Scroll Award 2008. They’re at the height of their game and Elemeno P are set to rrrrock Big Day Out 09.
NESIAN MYSTIK merge Polynesian culture with RnB, Hip Hop, Reggae and good times. As JJ once said - “Dy-na-mite”! Formed in the music room of Auckland’s Western Springs College in 1999, the talented ensemble released their first NZ single in November of 2002. Their debut album Polysaturated debuted at number 1 and achieved triple platinum status. Follow up 2006 album, Freshmen, also gained them two top ten hits. With a strong fanbase in Australia, the UK and Pacific Islands, the group has supported international artists Robbie Williams, Missy Elliott, Shaggy and The Black Eyed Peas. The boys will be bringing the melodies this Big Day Out from Elevator Musiq, their third album, and their set promises to be a crowd hit, particularly with their recent single Nesian 101 reaching number one on the New Zealand singles charts.
From Perth to the world… now PENDULUM are swinging their way down under for BIG DAY OUT. With UK No.2 album In Silico under their belts, the drum’n’bass upstarts have morphed into something altogether new – a post-rave mash-up, perhaps? Whatever it is they do, it’s explosive – fan raves from their recent UK festival sets include words like “immense”, “class” and “the future lies here”. The band’s motto is simple: “We spend nearly every waking moment trying to create music that takes you out of this universe.” Fasten your seatbelts, PENDULUM are on deck for BIG DAY OUT 2009.
Run away boys THE
LIVING END had a monumental start to their career
producing the massive selling EP/single “Prisoner of
Society”/ “Second Solution”. And their well-loved
punkabilly sing-alongs have continued to rock us out over
the past ten years…but enough talk of the past! THE LIVING
END return to stand and deliver a rousing festival set for
BIG DAY OUT fans this summer, with blistering hits from
their uber successful LP White Noise. Recorded with the
assistance of John Agnello (Sonic Youth, Dinosaur Jr) and
mixed by the legendary Brendan O’Brien (AC/DC and Pearl
Jam) it wouldn’t be stretching the truth to say this album
is of the finest rock’n’roll pedigree. Dig it live at
BDO!
SNEAKY SOUND SYSTEM have been
spreading the good word far and wide for their brand new
sophomore album 2, touring the UK, even fronting up at
Glastonbury for an ass-busting set of groovy dance tunes.
Their slow burning debut album was a smash in Australia,
delivering four singles which, at one stage, were all in the
top forty chart AT THE SAME TIME! And the album spent 69
weeks in the Top 100. 2008 sees radio stations salivating
over their catchy wistful electro-dance single “Kansas
City”. So its high time we got them over to Auckland.
SNEAKY are bound to set the kids bouncing at the BIG DAY
OUT. Don’t go and do something stupid like miss ‘em now!
Following the decision by New Zealand’s garage rock behemoth The D4 to go on extended hiatus, vocalist and guitarist Jimmy Christmas shaved his head and retreated into the wilds of Auckland’s central city to begin work on an ambitious new project. Lurking around his local haunts in Kingsland, he began to pen a new batch of songs and emerged with a fistful of anthems and a new creation through which to deliver them - LUGER BOA. Having just completed a 2008 tour with NZ rock royalty Shihad and The Mint Chicks, Jimmy and his cacophonous crew of crazies are set to unleash their live arsenal at Big Day Out. With the release of the single 1000 Hooks and debut album set to drop in November, Luger Boa promise to deliver a balls to the wall rock extravaganza.
COBRA KAHN’s 2005 emergence from the wreckage of New Zealand hard hitters Sommerset, Day One and Balance has provided the Auckland rock scene with a band that is more than the sum of its parts. Since the 2006 release of their mini album Sleepless Lions Cobra Kahn has built on the live reputation of their previous incarnations, garnering a big and loyal local fanbase. But disinterested in retreading old ground and playing to the conventions, Cobra Khan have sidestepped genre restrictions and audience expectations to make their debut album Helgorithms, set for release in October 08. Boasting heavy hooks and guitar-driven joints that push the boundaries of contemporary metal and punk rock, Cobra Kahn come to the gig with a set list sure to impress.
Renowned for her energetic live performances, smooth vocals and conscious lyrics, LADI 6 (Karoline Tamati) will be tantalizing eardrums and swaying hips at Big Day Out. As part of New Zealand’s first all-girl hip-hop group Sheelahroc, Ladi6 had her first taste of the spotlight when she was nominated for Best Vocalist/MC at the 2003 bNet Music Awards for hit track If I Gave You The Mic. Since then, Ladi6’s unique sound and various collaborations have seen her star continue to rise, garnering a strong following throughout New Zealand, Australia and Europe. The hip hop songstress has lent her sultry vocals to some of the top underground albums to come out of Aotearoa in the last decade. Dropping tracks from her upcoming debut solo album, produced by Mu (Fat Freddys Drop) and Parks, Ladi6 is sure to be a crowd favourite.
Auckland four-piece and new kids on the block, THE NAKED AND FAMOUS, make twisted pop with big guitars, bigger beats, hooks aplenty and songs to die for. Bursting onto the scene in early 2008, they've already been tagged as the ones to watch. In just 6 months, their two EPs This Machine and No Light have seen them top the Radioscope Alt Charts twice, score Record Of The Week on C4, grab 5/5 Star reviews in the National Press and receive an invitation to CMJ in New York. Yeow! Don’t miss these in-demand youngsters heating things up.
