Wintec's School of Science and Primary Industries enjoys success


Matt Perry's Landscape Design


Second year Landscape Design student Mathew Perry was awarded a silver medal at the region's iconic annual Waikato Home and Garden Show and his work was voted the "People's Choice" for the Landscape Courtyard Competition. The theme of his design was "Taking it Out". Fellow second year student Monique Hoovers also entered an award and she received a highly commended.

Head of School Rosemary Wyborn thanked staff Melody Williams, Antoinette Van Weerden, with special thanks to Steve Bluett for their commitment to the students in the pursuit of excellent results with their design. She also thanked industry sponsors who provided some of the materials, and to Resene for the paint that they donated.

The Gold medal for the competition was won by Wintec landscape graduates Helen Boyes and Lee Cloke from "Project Landscape", and 2007 graduate Richard Knox received a silver award for the Lighting Award.

A further success for the School took place in Wellington where Diploma in Arboriculture student Jacob Sewell was first overall at the Wellington Region NZAA (New Zealand Arboriculture Association) Tree Climbing competitions. Thanks to his tutors Rob and Andy and special thanks for tree climbing training from tutor Marlies Laser.

Floristry graduate Caitlin Thorburn has won gold at the World Skills New Zealand competition ,winning the Floristry section and is waiting to see if she'll be competing at the  world finals in Canada next year. Caitlin said it was tough but she thoroughly enjoyed it. "I really enjoyed the competition. There were seven competitors and we had seven tasks over three days."
