Cheapest Movie Tickets Of The Year On Sale Now!
Wattie’s Cans Film Festival, Wednesday 29 October 2008
Swap a can of food for a ticket to a blockbuster movie at the 15th annual Wattie’s Cans Film Festival - and help feed New Zealand families this Christmas.
The Wattie’s Cans Film Festival gives Kiwis the chance to enjoy a fun (and thrifty!) night out with all the donated canned food benefiting the Salvation Army’s Christmas food bank appeal. What’s more, Wattie’s will make your gesture of goodwill go twice as far. As in previous years, Wattie’s has pledged to match all food donations can-for-can – effectively doubling the public contribution.
The Salvation Army’s National Public Relations Secretary Major Robert Ross says the organisation’s food banks are feeling the effects of the current economic downturn with fewer donations being received, probably due to rising food costs and shrinking family budgets. However, the demand for relief is rising steadily - requests are up 20% on last year.
“This year we have seen more low to middle income earners using our services, not just beneficiaries. The economic slump is affecting everyone but we hope that people will be able to spare a can of food to attend the Festival and enjoy a fun family night out.”
Major Ross says Christmas and the summer holiday period is the busiest time of year for food banks, and the Wattie’s Cans Film Festival goes a long way towards relieving some of the pressure put on food banks. Last year 22,130 cans were donated by the public – enough to assist The Salvation Army to help around 9,500 families.
Wattie’s Marketing Manager, Michelle Rice, says, “Wattie’s commitment to match every donated can means the contribution to the Salvation Army Christmas food banks is instantly doubled - so the more cans the public brings in the better!"
With the generous support of Hoyts, SKYCITY, Reading and independent cinemas, the festival will include recent blockbuster hits including Hancock, Iron Man, and Indiana Jones and the Temple of the Crystal Skull. Popular family titles include: Kung Fu Panda, Horton Hears a Who, and The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian.
Moviegoers can collect tickets in exchange for a can from their local participating cinema from Monday 20 October but hurry; seats are limited and last year the festival sold out.
