Finalists for Short Film Awards Announced

The two finalists for the this year’s Show Me Shorts Best Film award are ‘Noise Control’ by Phill Simmonds and ‘Serial Killer’ by Bruno du Bois.

Phill Simmonds and his brother Jeff won the award last year for their film ‘A Very Nice Honeymoon’. ‘Noise Control’ is a comedic animated documentary about a kindergarten’s pet rooster that is shot by a noise control officer. ‘Serial Killer’ is a scary thriller about a French family on holiday in New Zealand who get lost and run out of petrol.

The two finalists for the Best Student Film award are, ‘Calici: A Rural Conspiracy’ by Claudia Babirat and ‘Animal Instincts’ by Cameron Edser and Michael Richards. ‘Calici’ is a documentary about how Kiwi farmers illegally introduced the rabbit killing virus in the early 90’s. ‘Animal Instincts’ is an animated comedy about a cow and a sheep at war.

The finalists in the Atlab Best Technical Contribution category are Roseanne Liang for editing the comedic ‘Take 3’ about three Asian actresses facing racism at auditions, and Cameron Edser and Michael Richards for animating ‘Animal Instincts.’

The Panavision Special Jury Prize can be awarded for any aspect of the filmmaking process. This year the finalists are Baudouin du Bois for writing ‘Serial Killer’ and Heather Diprose for Art Direction on the armchair-travel drama ‘Betty Banned Sweets.’

The judges for this year’s awards are film critic Helene Wong, General Manager of Hoyts Film Distribution Elizabeth Trotman, Actor Bruce Hopkins and Kiwa Media Producer Karla Rodgers.

All of the judges were impressed with the overall quality of the films. The finalists will play at the Teza Opening/Awards night at 7pm on Thursday the 6th of November at the Academy Cinema in Auckland, where the winners will be announced.
