Bring Your Old Mobile Phones To Southern Amp Fest

Fireworks night is over again, history has been made with Obama securing the Whitehouse and Kiwis are talking “change” when we all go to the polls on Saturday… We’ll see, but one thing that’s sure this November is that the Southern Amp Music Festival in Christchurch this Sunday is shaping up to be the biggest Amp yet with well over 7000 ‘voters’ for the Southern Amp Party expected at Westpac Arena Festival Park to celebrate the one thing that unites the World in these financially and politically dodgy times – Live Music, and lots of it!

The final 1000 tickets for Southern Amp 08 will be up for grabs from 10am Sunday morning when the box office opens for the South Island’s Biggest Live Music Festival with the live action exploding into life at midday. 40 live bands and DJs will rock and groove the festival until 11.30pm.

As part of a major recycling drive there are loads of prizes on offer on the day including backstage tours, meet & greets with the huge line-up of international and NZ bands for anyone who brings their old mobile phone to the event for recycling. Vodafone will operate a special VIP ‘queue jumping’ entrance lane for people bringing old mobiles to the event for recycling. Also those punters still wanting to buy tickets might even find their old mobiles have got a cash value towards their ticket… For details on that and all mobile recycling initiatives at Southern Amp 08, text ‘AMP’ to 787 on your mobile, or sign up to the email database at www.southernamp.co.nz – details will be sent out before the weekend.

Southern Amp organisers welcome this excellent environmental drive especially as mobile phones are one of the biggest ‘modern waste’ items on the planet. Vodafone promotes re-use of the mobile phones it collects by donating them to a charity called Enable Community for donation to people in developing countries who then use them to help run their small businesses and keep in touch with family members. About half of the mobiles collected get used again, but if they are ‘past use-by date’ and can't be re-used they are recycled and the parts are used to make things like taps, road cones and even jewelry! Over 40,000 mobiles were collected for re-use or recycling in NZ last year!

Southern Amp and Vodafone want to collect as many old mobiles as they can at this year’s event so we can stop them ending up in landfill, rivers, or stuffed in cupboards at home when they could be helping people in developing countries work their way out of poverty! Get those old mobiles down to Southern Amp on Sunday and score some stuff!
