South Island Club Triathlon Series Underway This Weekend
The South Island Club Challenge Triathlon Series has been confirmed with seven events included on the calendar, the first of which is in Southland this Sunday at Hokonui.
The series is primarily one to reward and encourage participation in the sport throughout the South Island but also provides a great focal point for club competition and camaraderie.
Across the seven events, club members will earn points for their club in any one of six categories from U19 to Masters (40+). Points will be earned for those finishing in the first 6 in their category.
The opening event at Hokonui this weekend features a triathlon, duathlon and a multi sport race featuring kayaking, cycling and running. Distances and terrain covered encourage everyone from first timers to experienced elite athletes to take part with the usual strong focus on athlete safety and welfare, including the full support of the Tri NZ technical team on the day.
Tri NZ Board Member and South Islander Adair Craik says the series is a great way to recognize the importance of clubs in the future of the fast growing sport.
“The idea behind the South Island Club Series is to further encourage New Zealanders to take part in our great sport but to do it while proudly wearing the badge, colours or logo of their local club.
“Tri NZ has clubs at the heart of future participation programmes and relies very much on local infrastructure to encourage further growth in the sport. This series motivates clubs in the South to inspire existing and new members into events while at the same time creating some friendly but healthy rivalry between the regions.”
