Wellington’s Generosity Set To Help Thousands This Christmas

The Wellington City Mission this year will have delivered a record number of Christmas Food parcels and hampers by Christmas Eve.

Wellington City Missioner, Father Des Britten says, “This year, we will be making up hampers, targeted at people who we and other agencies are working with and are genuinely in need and trying to break the dependence cycle. This gives them the delight and dignity of being independent and enjoying a family Christmas in their own home, like most of us do.”

“The hampers will be full of Christmas goodies donated by Wellingtonians throughout November and December, such as hams, chickens, pavlovas, Christmas mince pies, Christmas cake, chocolates, tins of biscuits, Christmas crackers, candy canes and gifts for mums, dads and kids. The hampers will be beautifully wrapped up in a Christmas box and hand delivered to their door.”

Wellington City Mission Special Events Organiser Dan Boyd says “This years response to the Be a Star campaign has been amazing, a major increase on previous years and while I think everyone is finding these economic times hard the people of Wellington have still found it in their heart to think about those less fortunate than themselves, and that’s really special…..and at the end of the day It means we can help more people”.

“Many thousands of people will be touched by the generosity of Wellingtonians both before and on Christmas day and that is something as a City we can be proud of” says Dan Boyd.

On Christmas Eve, Fr Des Britten, along with Hon Peter Dunne (Minister of Revenue and MP for Ohariu); Hon Heather Roy, (Minister of Consumer Affairs), Grant Robertson, (MP for Wellington Central), and Wellington City Mission Staff will personally deliver the special Christmas hampers to those families who need it most.
