WHAT: The Met’s third season of the Emmy Award-winning The Met: Live in HD continues with a special transmission of the acclaimed John Adams opera DOCTOR ATOMIC, hosted by acclaimed mezzo-soprano Susan Graham.

This historic Met premiere has been called “A hit at the Met!” by the Associated Press, “A masterpiece” by New York Magazine, “Uncommonly beautiful” by The New Yorker, and Newsweek called it “stunning.”

For the first time, the Metropolitan Opera presents a work by Pulitzer Prize-winning composer John Adams: Doctor Atomic, his opera about J. Robert Oppenheimer and the creation of the atomic bomb. The piece is set in New Mexico in the summer of 1945, as scientists, led by Oppenheimer, and the military prepare to test the first nuclear bomb, events that will radically change the course and fabric of history. Finley is joined by Sasha Cooke as Kitty Oppenheimer, Richard Paul Fink as the physicist Edward Teller, and in their Met debuts Eric Owens as General Leslie Groves, and Meredith Arwady, who plays Pasqualita, the Oppenheimer’s Tewa maid.

Penny Woolcock, an award-winning British TV and film director who worked with Adams on the 2003 film of his opera The Death of Klinghoffer, is making both her Met and her opera-directing debut with this new production. Doctor Atomic will be conducted by Alan Gilbert, the New York Philharmonic’s music director designate, also in his Met debut. The libretto for Doctor Atomic is by Peter Sellars, who adapted the text from original sources, including declassified government files and conversations with people who worked on the Manhattan Project.

Julian Crouch designed the sets, and the costumes are by Tony Award-winning costume designer Catherine Zuber. The lighting is by another Tony winner, Brian MacDevitt, in his Met debut. Choreographer Andrew Dawson and sound designer Mark Grey also make their Met debuts with the new production, and the video designs are by Leo Warner and Mark Grimmer for Fifty Nine Productions. (Crouch and Fifty Nine Productions recently collaborated on the Met’s new production of Philip Glass’s Satyagraha and are working together once again on the upcoming 125th Anniversary Gala.)

Prior to the performance of the one act opera and at the conclusion, HD cameras take movie-goers backstage for a rare behind-the-scenes view of the Met with host Susan Graham. The live transmission is directed for telecast by Gary Halvorson; Jay Saks is audio producer.

Doctor Atomic marks the third performance of the season as part of The Met: Live in HD series and will be transmitted live from New York via satellite into 477 movie theaters performing arts centers, universities and museums across the U.S. The performance will be shown live in high-definition in movie theaters throughout the Americas and Europe. Over 100 locations in Canada will exhibit the event as well as the following locations: the Auditorio Nacional in Mexico City, Mexico, the Cultural Costarricense Norteamericano in San Jose, Costa Rica, the Cine Teatro 25 de Mayo in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and at Caribbean Cinema in Puerto Rico. The series continues in the U.K., Belgium, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Czech Republic, Poland, Dubai, Estonia, Finland, Ireland, Hungary, and debuts for the first time in Greece, Peru, and Latvia. Doctor Atomic is the season’s second The Met: Live in HD event to be transmitted live to Europe. The Met’s Opening Night Gala starring Renée Fleming kicked off The Met: Live in HD in the Americas with over 75,000 attendees at movie theaters in the U.S, Canada, Mexico, Costa Rica, and Argentina.
Doctor Atomic will be screened on a tape delay basis in Australia, Japan, New Zealand, and South Africa following the live transmission.
