Long Cloud Youth Theatre, run by Whitireia Performing Arts Centre, is calling for auditions for the 2009 intake. Long Cloud Youth Theatre is a unique Wellington based training and production company for young actors aged 16-21 years. The program is designed to equip the Company with the necessary performance skills to create vibrant, dynamic, bold and relevant theatre. The program involves intensive training in movement, voice and acting by New Zealand’s foremost theatrical tutors, as well as working on two productions throughout the year; one performed in June and one performed in November.

The Company is looking for ambitious, talented and motivated 16-21 year olds who want to embark on a year-long rollercoaster ride making theatre together. The program will be run by award winning teacher and director Willem Wassenaar (Angels in America, A Streetcar Named Desire, The Little Dog Laughed). Auditions will be held on Saturday 7 February 2009, 2pm-5pm at Whitireia Performance Arts Centre, 36 Vivian St. To sign up for an audition, please send name, contact details, age and a short description of theatre/drama background to longcloudyouththeatre@gmail.com. This application must be received by 2 February 2009.

Wassenaar: “I feel excited to be working with a talented group of young theatre makers in the structure of this Company. In this program you have the opportunity to grow as an actor and at the same time make theatre with likeminded passionate people. I have big dreams for the Company and I am especially looking for anyone who wants to make a big commitment and investment in being part of Long Cloud Youth Theatre. The program is intense with two rehearsals/classes each week, on Monday and Friday evenings, and you need to be available in some weekends and holidays as well. It is like doing sports at a very high level.”

The members of the Company come from different ethnic and social backgrounds and (high) schools. A majority of them pursue a career in the performing arts.

Long Cloud Youth Theatre has proven its potential by producing the highly successful Spring Awakening and the devised shows Colony! and GRIMM in 2008. In 2009 the Company will continue its success by performing a text based work as well as two new devised works. The company performs demand return seasons of Colony! and GRIMM in the 2009 Wellington Fringe Festival.
