Performing Arts programme to Cultural Capital

Internationally Acclaimed Performing Arts programme moves to Cultural Capital.

After 18 years of entertaining Porirua locals at Pātaka, Whitireia Bachelor of Applied Arts (Performing Arts) staff and students are looking forward to flourishing in a new, larger, more accessible professional dance studio. In 2009, the programme is based in the Wellington Performing Arts Centre, 36 Vivian Street, Wellington.

“The move will give us a strategic presence in the city,” says acting Performing Arts Programme Manager Mary-Rose Royal. “We look forward to continuing our relationship with the Porirua community and bringing a big part of that into the city with us.”

The Bachelor of Applied Arts (Performing Arts) is the only course of its kind, it includes the study of Samoan, Cook Islands, Māori and contemporary New Zealand dance, along with creative enterprise and contextual studies, creative techniques and research.

The creative enterprise topic recognises that for an artist to succeed in promoting their work, they need the skills to run a small business. Contextual studies focuses on the place of the individual in relation to New Zealand and where New Zealand stands in relation to the Pacific and the rest of the world. Essentially; equipping students with the vocational skills to thrive in all aspects of the industry.

Whitireia has gained national and international recognition as a centre of excellence for applied arts. Students travel overseas each year to perform at international festivals and upon return the programme has often been inundated with more invitations to perform internationally.

Places for the first year Bachelor of Applied Arts (Performing Arts) programme are still open. For more information call 0800 944 847.
