Dixon Achievement a First
Scott
Dixon’s achievement in winning the New Zealand Sportsman
of the Year award is an incredible honour both for Scott and
for motorsport,” MotorSport New Zealand president Steven
Kennedy said today.
“It is a first for the sport in this country and recognition for the first time that motor rac-ing is indeed a true sport. It has been discounted as a sport by various funding bodies over the years when we have sought support for outstanding performers.
“Scott’s award is a clear statement by sports commentators and acknowledgement of the huge physical performance required of top motor racing drivers.
“Scott had a distinguished career in New Zealand as a young driver and had an imme-diate impact when he began racing in the United States. His achievements since put him on a pinnacle among the great motorsport names in New Zealand history,” he said.
“MotorSport New Zealand also acknowledges and congratulates the other Halberg Awards winners, in particular Valerie Vili and twins Georgina Earl and Caroline Evers-Swindell.”
