Kartsport's Premier Meeting In Hawke's Bay This Weekend
The Hawke's Bay Kart Club's ZM Raceway will host New Zealand's premier international race meeting this weekend with drivers from around the country gathering to battle for CIK Trophy of New Zealand glory.
The CIK is the body which administers the sport worldwide and the annual CIK Trophy of New Zealand meeting offers drivers here the opportunity to qualify to compete overseas.
The first five KartSport New Zealand-licenced drivers in the KF3/JICA class, for instance, will be eligible to enter the CIK-FIA World Cup for KF3 meeting at Sarno in Italy in September.
Heading the entry list in the top Senior class, KZ2 (125cc gearbox), is defending CIK Trophy of New Zealand title-holder Ryan Grant from Auckland with competition expected to come from Taranaki's Nik Kiser and Wellington's Karl Wilson.
The introduction of the new KF3-spec engine makes it a little harder to pick in the combining KF3/JICA Junior class however with last year's third place-getter Jamie McNee returning to karts (after his recent move to cars) for the meeting there will be plenty of eyes on him.
Another recent kart-turned-car driver, reigning New Zealand Junior Yamaha champion Chris Cox, is also returning for the meeting. But before either get a sniff of glory both will have to see off, amongst others, reigning New Zealand Formula Junior champion Daniel Kinsman, two-time former New Zealand championship title winner Arie Hutton and their highly-rated KartSport Mt Wellington clubmate Paul Blomqvist.
As well as the CIK classes the meeting has attracted a large support class entry with racing for the Cadet, Junior 100cc Yamaha Restricted, Junior 100cc Yamaha, Senior 100cc Yamaha Light and 125cc Rotax Max Heavy classes.
