Work in Progress

MEDIA RELEASE 16 February 2009

Work in Progress

Christchurch Art Gallery is currently undergoing a transformation With all of the downstairs exhibition galleries closed to the public, staff are now dismantling the three summer season shows and preparing to unveil two major new exhibitions.

Miles: a life in architecture and Rita Angus: Life & Vision both open to the public on Saturday 7 March.

Although at first glance these might seem to be very different exhibitions, throughout both a garden theme can be detected - from the beautiful flower paintings and quintessential New Zealand landscapes of Rita Angus to Ohinetahi, Sir Miles Warren’s spectacular formal garden. This complements the Ellerslie International Flower Show, which will be on in Christchurch from 11-15 March,

“It is very rare for us to have all of the downstairs exhibition galleries closed at the same time - but it will certainly be worth it when we unveil the two new exhibitions,” says Gallery Director Jenny Harper

“In the meantime visitors to the Gallery will be directed upstairs, where we still have a number of excellent exhibitions on display. These include let it be now (an exhibition focusing on the work of emerging artists), White on White (an interactive exhibition that is one of a series aimed at encouraging younger audiences to consider the use of colour in art) and Nature’s Own Voice (which features works of art painted outdoors, directly from nature).”

The Gallery’s permanent collection galleries will also remain open to the public throughout the downstairs transformations, as will the Gallery Shop and Alchemy Café and Wine Bar.
