Go By Bike Day A Big Success
Olympic gold medallist board sailor, Tom
Ashley, was among the 500 strong who took part in North
Shore City’s ‘Go by Bike Day’ breakfast event - a
nationwide Bike Wise initiative which saw 50 cities
participate.
Tom Ashley announced himself as a keen cycling advocate and spoke of his enjoyment of cycling - an important component of his fitness regime.
“I actually like cycling more than windsurfing” he told an attentive and slightly surprised lycra-clad breakfast crowd.
Tom then went on to voice his support for events that promoted cycling, not only as a great leisure and fitness activity, but a smart and healthy mode of transport.
Councillors Chris Darby and Diane Hale showed their support for cycling by helping to lead the Devonport riding group safely to this morning's breakfast event.
Councillor Darby championed recent cycling initiatives undertaken by Council that had led to increased numbers of people cycling in the city but urged keen cyclists to lobby Council harder about the importance of continuing to invest in cycle provisioning.
Barbara Cuthbert of Cycle Action Auckland spoke of their organisation’s aim to get greater provisioning for cyclists, including a dedicated cycle lane across Auckland’s Harbour Bridge at some stage.
Those that rode in today were rewarded with a free breakfast, live music by Johnny Love and Dan Wrightson, a dare-devil ‘body hopping’ unicycle stunt demo and loads of spot prizes dished out by celebrity MC Jo Holley.
North Shore City Council supports today's event by providing a free breakfast event for all who took part.
