Sunshine And Spectators Return To Te Matatini Festival

Sunny skies, 16,000 spectators and a retinue of visiting dignitaries sparked energies at Te Matatini National Kapa Haka Festival in Tauranga today.

Heavy rain forced the postponement of yesterday’s performances, however Festival chairman Selwyn Parata said warm temperatures and a spirited crowd had restored the atmosphere of the Festival.

“A revised programme and early gate openings meant 15 teams had taken to the stage today,” he said, “and retail and food stallholders had done a booming business with heavy foot traffic through corporate expo and entertainment areas.

The Festival also played host to the Prime Minister John Key who noted the high number of non-Maori, tourists and international media who were present.

He described the four-day event as a fantastic showcase of Maori arts and culture. “There is no question we will continue to support Te Matatini, which has attracted a pleasing level of sponsorship this year.”

Patron of Te Matatini, Kiingi Tuheitia has been in attendance since the Festival commenced on Thursday along with iwi leaders and elders from around the country and kapa haka supporters.

Other dignitaries supporting the Festival included Maori Affairs Minister Dr. Pita Sharples, the Hon Georgina Te Heuheu and other National and Maori Party MPs and Opposition Members.

The first day of the event drew 10,000 spectators with crowd numbers expected to peak on Sunday when the remaining 13 teams take the stage prior to the winners being announced and the presentation of trophies.
