Auckland Looks Good With A Fringe

Auckland Looks Good With A Fringe

Fringe set to unleash the unconventional on Auckland

From Friday 27th February to Sunday 22nd March, performing arts venues across Auckland are set to come alive with the sights and sounds of the first ever Auckland Fringe.

For three exciting weeks, alternative performance spaces such as paddocks, churches, streets, beaches and parks, alongside numerous bars, galleries and small theatres, will provide a stage for emerging performers and arts practitioners. Dance, theatre, comedy, cabaret, music, visual arts and outdoor adventures combine to unleash the unconventional on Auckland.

Auckland Fringe organisers made a call-out to artists in September last year, with an overwhelming response from the Auckland arts community. Over 75 independent artists from across the country and the international stage will present fresh, creative work that is guaranteed to entertain audiences from Auckland’s North, South, East and West.

Galatos, the grande Dame of K Road is offering innovative entertainment throughout the festival. MIC Toi Rerehiko presents a programme jam packed with short plays, 24 hour performance pieces, upcoming bands and poets, music video retrospectives, jazz, burlesque cabaret, drag and vaudeville. For their Fringe calendar visit www.galatos.co.nz or www.mic.org.nz

Nearby venues Cross Street Studios, Te Karanga Gallery and St Kevin’s Arcade have plenty on offer; ramshackle pop, original theatre, visual arts and stimulating dance work created by emerging performers. The PumpHouse also welcomes new talent to the North Shore, while Piha’s iconic Lion Rock will be illuminated by a spectacular light show.

The renowned Splore Living Lounge features a diverse programme of music, comedy and entertainment with The Butterfly Zoo at Western Park in Ponsonby. Welcoming international cult comedy/music act The Cuban Brothers exclusively back to New Zealand, together with top NZ talent Liam Finn and Grammy Award-winning Jamaican singer Michael Rose. See www.splore.net for details.

The Fringe opens at The Basement on Friday 27th February with The Dirty Brothers Sideshow who present The Dark Party, a fusion of physical comedy and hardcore stunts - a theatrical event like no other. With only 6 nights at The Basement, punters are advised to book early to avoid missing out.

This is just taster of the wild assortment of entertainment the first ever Auckland Fringe has to offer. For more information visit www.aucklandfringe.org.nz.
