Fun, Fishing And Whanau With Pio Terei – On Maori Television!
Comedian Pio Terei travels Aotearoa to hoist the anchor on Maori relationships with Tangaroa – God of the Sea - in a new series of TANGAROA WITH PIO, to premiere on Maori Television on Sunday March 22 at 5.30 PM.
The 13-part, half-hour bi-lingual series follows Pio’s adventures around coastal communities, where he learns to dive for kina, paua and koura, dredge for Bluff oysters, pick giant tuaki, and mine greenstone.
Host Pio says he’s always been interested in different people’s methods of gathering and eating kaimoana. Being involved in this show has been an amazing opportunity to learn new things.
“It’s a tough job but someone’s got to do it, and I’m glad it’s me!” he says. “If you’re into fishing and collecting kaimoana, then this is a must-see series.”
In episode one: Pio sits his SSI open water diving certificate and tests his skills in the infamous Poor Knights Reserve. He then heads down to the tip of Te Waipounamu to dive for things he can catch and eat.
In later episodes, the presenter goes on to learn art of paua pearl making, takes a look at eco-tourism in Queen Charlotte Sounds and goes white-baiting on the West Coast.
“This show is more than just a fishing show, it’s a unique Maori adventure following the close relationships tangata whenua have with one of our most resourceful and knowledgeable atua – gods – Tangaroa,” says series producer Aroha Shelford. “Our mission has been to share the many stories and colourful histories from around the motu, and we have been humbled to have has the opportunity to ‘meet and eat’ with the many whanau featuring on this series.”
Each episode is peppered throughout with plenty of laughs and local characters and history.
