Dave Lefleming and Sandro
Kopp celebrated the opening of the exhibition "Go Figure" at
Frankfurt's Krauts Gallery last week.
The event was held at the legendary Cocoon Club and drew a crowd of about a thousand people, including the cream of the city's cultural and financial elite, such as the world famous DJ Sven Väth and one of the Deutsche Banks art collectors - who purchased one of Lefleming's signature car bonnets, intricately adorned with oil paintings of brightly coloured figures.
Lefleming was born in Palmerston North and made a name for himself as a painter in Wellington, before moving to London five years ago, where he still lives and works. He has been exhibiting there successfully in the past years and his work has been obtained by several significant collectors, among them Keith Flint, the frontman of the band "The Prodigy".
"Go Figure" was his first artistic venture into mainland Europe.
Half-New Zealander Sandro Kopp, was born in Germany, but studied at the Learning Connexion in Wellington and lived and worked in Wellington for many years. This is also where he first met Dave Lefleming. Alongside portraits of fashion legend Veruschka and of his girlfriend, film actress Tilda Swinton, he showed his celebrated piece "The New Me" for which he painted a self-portrait every day for month. It was exhibited in both New York and Wellington last year.
His work -which aims to "create conceptual art, using the vocabulary of classical oil painting"- has been shown at the BP Portrait Awards in London and exhibited in the National Portrait Galleries of Scotland and England. He was recently commissioned to design two permanent mosaic pieces for Westminster Cathedral in London.
