In 2004, four of the greatest voices in the world emerged to spearhead an entire musical genre by bringing the sound of opera to the world of popular music. Now as one of the most successful groups in the world with over 22 million albums sold, IL DIVO have embarked on a massive World Tour in 2009 that includes their FIRST EVER VISIT TO NEW ZEALAND.
The ‘AN EVENING WITH IL DIVO’ New Zealand tour will take place in October and travel to Auckland and Christchurch. Having released four chart topping albums, New Zealand audiences have fallen in love with IL DIVO. They finally now have the chance to see the international operatic supergroup perform live at Auckland’s Vector Arena on Friday 2nd October and Christchurch’s Westpac Arena on Monday 5th October. Tickets go on sale Thursday 2nd April.

AN EVENING WITH IL DIVO signals a striking departure from the group’s two previous tours. For the first time, they are working with Creative Director William Baker, who is best known for styling some of the most iconic pop figures of the past decade, including Kylie Minogue, Victoria Beckham, Britney Spears, Garbage and Jamiroquai.

“The most important thing about Il Divo is the power of their sound, which is at its most remarkable and mesmerising in a live performance,” says William. “To have the opportunity to embellish this force with something visual is really exciting. Like the best operas, the key to this show has been about creating sets and worlds that frame and compliment their unique talent.”

With a hi-tech stage and a digital light show, the sharp and seductive quartet is now able to showcase songs from their four studio albums against an even more spectacular backdrop. Utterly modern yet thoroughly appreciative of the group’s traditional strengths, the combination of a fresh artistic vision and Il Divo’s proven talent is set to take fans on a stirring musical and visual journey. The UK leg of the world tour kicked off in Manchester last month to rave reviews and will continue throughout the UK and Europe before embarking on the North American leg and then onto New Zealand.

Il DIVO, comprised of American tenor David Miller, popular French singer Sebastien Izambard, Swiss tenor Urs Buhler, and Spanish baritone Carlos Marin, were initially brought together by pop impresario Simon Cowell in 2004, following an extensive worldwide audition process. The virtuoso blending of operatic technique with romantic and popular song took the world by storm, with sales of over 22 million. Their first three albums, Il Divo, Ancora and Siempre, scored 39 #1 chart positions across the world. The group also released the platinum album The Christmas Collection in 2005. Sales of their debut self-titled album smashed Led Zeppelin's 25 year-old record of being the only band to achieve a number 1 album without a single release.

IL DIVO’S current album, The Promise, which went Gold in New Zealand, is an album of contrasts. “People might be surprised by this album,” suggests tenor David Miller. “Our goal was to approach it with fresh ears and fresh spirits, and try some different things. We’ve still got all the cannons and fireworks, but there is more range, different dynamics, more light and shade, more color. It’s a more complete album.”

It includes a version of Frankie Goes To Hollywood’s ‘The Power Of Love’ with what Miller hails as “the biggest Il Divo finale you’ve ever heard.” But at the other end of the spectrum stands a haunting and beautiful version of Leonard Cohen’s ‘Hallelujah’. Their stunning rendition of Albioni’s ‘Adagio’ is a stand out track, while the album’s title takes it name from the beautiful Italian original ‘La Promessa’. There is also a Latin flavoured original, ‘Angelina’ and a slowed-down version of ABBA’s ‘Winner Takes It All’.
