Great art and great food

Great art and great food

This weekend members of the public can enjoy great art and great home baked food in the one picturesque place.

Whanganui UCOL’s final year Bachelor of Fine Arts students are staging an art exhibition at the historic Craig House and Garden which will be open – just for the weekend - as the Art and Garden Café.

Craig House and Garden owner and fourth year student, Helen Craig, loves entertaining at her home and says people love being there. So, the idea for the Art and Garden café was born.

Students’ work will be displayed on the deck of the house, ranging from paintings to photographs and glasswork to sculptures. All work will be available for purchase.

Helen says that the idea for a café exhibition fits in perfectly for her as well as other students as a chance to exhibit their work during Wanganui’s Artist Open Studio Weekend. “Last year when I was looking at art during the Open Weekend I really thought it would be great if some of the galleries offered refreshments, but none of them did,” Helen says.

On top of great student artwork, the Art and Garden café will also offer home baked food. Everyone in the fourth year class will bake contributions and a team will also be on hand each day to bake and serve fresh scones and talk to customers.

The funds raised will support the students’ end of year show to be held in November.

Whanganui UCOL’s Bachelor of Fine Arts is a four year degree offered by the Quay School of the Arts and includes subjects such as painting, glass, printmaking, photography and sculpture.
