UCOL gives big for Australian bushfire appeal

First year nursing students at Whanganui UCOL have been fundraising to help those affected by the Australian bushfires.

In a class discussion about giving to others in need, first year nursing lecturer Carol Stewart had used the Australian bushfires as an example which inspired the students to start fundraising.

The students ran a competition for which prizes were donated by local businesses. “Even in these tough financial times their generosity was overwhelming,” says appeal organiser Petrina Clark. “The money raised by students would not have been possible without the support of these businesses.”

The following businesses were approached and supported the students by providing prizes: Anndion Lodge, the Wanganui Chronicle, Collegiate Quality Inn, Embassy 3, Splash Centre, Mill Liquor Save, Stonez Restaurant and Dimock’s Retrovision.

The nursing students raised $850, news of which spread quickly throughout the campus. Staff and students proceeded to take part in a series of further fundraisers which included hat days and ‘Casual Wear Wednesdays’.

“We have managed to fundraise over $1000 which has been deposited into the Ray Stevens Australian bushfire ANZ account,” says Petrina.

The fundraiser was completely student driven and UCOL has been proud to support their initiative. Whanganui UCOL management showed their appreciation to the students by treating the entire class of 33 to a free pizza lunch.

Petrina says that Whanganui UCOL is extremely proud of their first year nursing students. “Everyone has really dug deep to help those affected by the bushfires,” she says.
