With 35 years driving
around the streets of Wellington one Downtown Community
Ministry service user has decided to get legal.
“Every time I drive, I get so worried I’m going to be caught”, he says.
“I’m looking around to see if there are checkpoints set up. It’ll be such a relief to not have to think about all that.”
He says school wasn’t easy and he was kicked out before reaching high school.
“Not being able to read has been the only thing stopping me from getting a licence. With DCM’s help we might be able to sort it out.”
But, in the last year or so, the anxiety has been too much and he wants to finally undergo the theory test.
Senior Social Worker Dougal Speir says, “We’ve provided literacy training over the last year at DCM with a volunteer supporting his learning but at his age it’s a real challenge”.
“The Automobile Association informs us that a reader service is available for people in this situation. So we’re hopeful he’ll be able to sit his licence in the near future.”
