The month of May kicks off with a hiss and a ROAR!!!   From the 7th - 23rd you’ll encounter collections of characters, creatures, stories and metaphors as you journey through three shows with very individual visual languages that creep and crawl along our walls! 

Charles Cunningham, Meta Assink and Poppy Moore have created artworks that place an emphasis on the quirky and playful with a strongly patterned and decorative aesthetic that energises the gallery environment!

Stomp.  Bellow.  Snort    is a sophisticated and quirky arrangement of busy, pensive and densely colourful characters.

"It’s life in its many forms that really excites me.  What I most enjoy about these works is that they almost always elicit a response from their viewers” says Meta who couples a strong interest in the world full of creatures absorbed with character and an intuitive approach to colour combinations.

“The last detail of each creature that I paint is its eyes. As the eyes are completed the character suddenly becomes apparent. Sometimes who emerges surprises even me”.

Privileged Place … Charles Cunningham 

Privileged Place presents a vibrant and dynamic array of drawings that grab your senses in a heartfelt embrace. 

Charles is a self-taught Artist who has a highly singular vision of the world. He brings this vision to life through his work and is ever present in all his drawings infusing them with his thoughts, ideas, dreams and deeper meanings.  “His art comes from the fringe but is not periphery” says tutor Chris Barrand.

Privileged  Place consists of portraits, objects and patterns which have an expressionary style deeply seated in his own design aesthetic.

“Art is there to be enjoyed and puzzled with” says Charles, who talks about his work being friendly, thematic and belong to the artist’s personality.   He is a man who not only uses his art to work through personal questions but also continues to find fun, excitement and endless possibilities in his ability to draw and create.  

The Maker and the Made … Poppy Moore

Poppy Moore is well known for seeing the extraordinary in the ordinary.  Her art process often starts with what is available at hand – like a word or a domestic item - which she investigates for meaning and then plays with to find its visual form.   “After some years it has become clear to me that the method and materials I employ to ‘tell these stories ' are integral components to the stories themselves. I marvel at this” says Poppy.

 There are two strands to her work; one is a playful representation of kitsch Kiwiana (like her  infamous Liberated Lamingtons) and the second strand is a more philosophical investigation of language and human life in which she seeks to understand our existence and how to be more cohesive as a community.  Poppy values colour, texture and composition as well considered foundations for works – and this is evident in The Maker and the Made.

ROAR! gallery is a vibrant gallery which aims to support and promote Outsider Art.  Its focus is not to define this term but to be open to those who feel connected to an art making approach which is unique, honest, compelling and about a persons total connection with their creativity, uninfluenced by external restrictions and conventions.   We're proud to bring you this thrilling combination of talent and awareness.
