Media Release                                                                                 23 May 2009

Massive $16.3 Million Powerball Prize Goes To Cambridge

A lucky player from Cambridge will be getting the shock of their lives when they check their winning ticket and realise they are $16.3 million richer following tonight’s Lotto Powerball draw, says NZ Lotteries’ Chief Executive, Todd McLeay.

The winning ticket was purchased at Countdown in Cambridge, and is worth a total of $16,352,565 with $16,136,286 from Powerball First Division and $216,279 from Lotto First Division.

“This is the third top Powerball prize won this year – in March, a Powerball player  from Christchurch won more than $4 million, and in February, two Powerball players from Masterton and Lower Hutt shared the top prize and took home more than $5 million each,” says Mr McLeay.

“There will be no mistaking the zeros on this win, it’s a huge $16.3 million first division prize for our player in Cambridge,” says Mr McLeay.

Also tonight, 5 other Lotto players also won $216,279 with Lotto First Division. The winning tickets were sold at Sandringham Food Market in Auckland, Foodtown Howick in Manukau, Clevedon Superette in Manukau, Mt Maunganui New World in Mt Maunganui and Raumati South Four Square in Paraparaumu.

A Strike Four prize of $212,727, was also won tonight by a player who purchased their ticket from Wainoni Pak’N’Save in Christchurch.

Tonight’s other big winner was Ashburton grandmother Ethel Hume who spun and won $125,000 on Lotto’s Winning Wheel.

All Lotto players are automatically in the draw to win the opportunity to spin Lotto’s Winning Wheel, regardless of the type of ticket they buy. Players can check their ticket at any lottery outlet.

Tonight’s Winning Wheel ticket was sold at Pak’N’Save Hastings in Hastings. The serial number is 363-13661735-20XX.

“Anyone who bought a ticket at this retailer should write their name on the back of the ticket and check it as soon as possible at any NZ Lotteries’ outlet," Mr McLeay says.
