Young Fashion Designer Award registrations close 15 June
Registrations close on 15 June for the 2009 ‘Looking to the Future - The Newmarket Young Fashion Designer Award’.
In its second year the award is open to any aspiring young New Zealand fashion designer aged between 15 and 18. The winner will travel to New York Fashion Week to work backstage for the Karen Walker show.
The competition is organised by the Newmarket Business Association and sponsored by Business World Travel, Qantas, Karen Walker, Whitecliffe College of Arts & Design, and Taylor Boutique.
Local corporate travel agency, Business World Travel, located in the National Bank building, level 5 - 187 Broadway, is sponsoring the winner’s four nights’ accommodation in New York.
Grant Bevin, director of Business World Travel, says he’s thrilled to be part of the Newmarket Young Fashion Designer Award.
“Business World Travel is in the heart of Broadway, and this is a brilliant community initiative that is great for young people wanting to further their fashion careers. We’re really proud to be part of the Newmarket community and to support something that’s so positive,” says Mr Bevin.
Award organiser and Newmarket marketing manager Lea Worth says the competition’s prize package provides the winning designer an opportunity of a lifetime.
The winner of the Newmarket Young Fashion Designer Award will fly Qantas for two to New York. He or she will get to work backstage at the Karen Walker Show at New York Fashion Week and will receive $1,000NZ spending money.
The winning designer will also receive a 12-month scholarship at Whitecliffe College of Arts & Design, and a two-week design assistant internship working alongside Auckland designer Vicki Taylor in the Taylor Workroom.
Mrs Worth says it made sense for Newmarket to organise this award given it is the “Fashion Capital of New Zealand” and the fact that there is very little on offer for young people interested in getting into the fashion industry.
Last year’s inaugural 2008 competition attracted entrants from as far south as Te Anau and as far north as Whangarei. The winner was Paris Kirby of Westlake Girls’ High School who is now studying at Whitecliffe College of Arts & Design.
Registration forms, further details, and the terms and conditions can found on www.newmarket.co.nz. Lea Worth can be contacted on 529-3047 or lea@newmarket.co.nz for further information.
