This Week at Bats

This Week at Bats<

You know how apples are all in season at the moment for some cheap eating? They're totally in season at BATS too! Courtesy of ENZA, The Blackening has been gifted 1,000 apples - the mind boggles as to what they are going to do with them...

Seriously, this is going to be a good one - BATS has always been a big Paul Rothwell fan, and with his Bruce Mason Award sitting on his mantlepiece now, we felt it was high time we see his newest stuff. The Blackening opens on Wednesday, and tonight we have a special sneak preview of another piece he has been working on in The PlayPit. Check the deets below.

In other BATS news, the latest Guano will be hot off the Lithoprint press on Wednesday - are you on our mailing list? Update your address here for guaranteed BATS goodness, and a peek in to what is coming up.

The Blackening

Sometimes you shouldn't go back.

The outstanding new work from the 2008 Bruce Mason Award winner, Paul Rothwell, writer of such plays as Hate Crimes, Deliver Us, Kissing Bone and Golden Boys. He's controversial, local and he is back with a dark, creepy, mysterious tale set on a family Apple Orchard. With Jed Brophy, Jack Shadbolt and Johnny Moffatt playing three brothers, and a crack team of designers including Tony DeGoldi (Te Karakia), Jennifer Lal (Turbine), Stephen Gallagher (The Lovely Bones) and Paul McLaughlin (HOTEL) directing. It's gonna be pretty damn fine.

TONIGHT! The PlayPit

Monthly informal playreadings at The Pit Bar at BATS continue tonight with a humdinger of a script - You be the Angel I Be the Ghost by Paul Rothwell (whose show The Blackening also happens to open this week). From 6pm.

The existence of the Deep and Meaningful is one of our great achievements as a species. These glorious little conversations have the power to change lives, challenge ideals and forge friendships that last a really long time. BATS is pleased to report that Paul Rothwell's script has all the elements of this experience, promising a night of soul-searching... and of course after every PlayPit we like to have a big old discussion, so you can tell us what you think, in true D&M style.

With Rothwell's newest production opening at BATS this Wednesday, this is the perfect opportunity to ease back and have a taste of what else the acclaimed playwright has on offer.

Win tickets to The Blackening!

A double pass is up for grabs to see The Blackening on next Tuesday night. If you reckon you can make it then and want to come for free, then tell us what ENZA stands for. The winner will be drawn randomly on Friday 12th June at 12pm.
A big congratulations to Meg Embleton, who won tickets to the opening night of this fine play. See you on Wednesday Meg!

Mental Health Break

The wonderful Scottish verison of The Blackening - why don't we do this in New Zealand? It looks fun... if you aren't the one getting married.

Have you heard of literal videos? We've just discovered them - they're brilliant. Total Eclipse of the Heart and White Wedding have never been so good.

But while we're waiting for such an occasion, Steph recommends the following recipes to use up Apples while they are still cheap: Apple Pancakes, and a good ole fashioned Apple Cake. So if the apples on set go missing, we know they'll be in someone's kitchen!
