Give volunteering a go

The dedication of thousands of volunteers each year allows Plunket to continue to provide support and services to families with young children throughout the country.

More than one million New Zealanders annually give their time and skills to make a difference in their communities - and Volunteer Awareness Week (14-20 June) is a chance to acknowledge and thank these people and to understand why they give their time.

Julia Hunt, Secretary, Upper Clutha Plunket Sub Branch, Volunteer Committee said she wished to support Plunket in her area after the birth of her daughter. "My local Plunket Nurse and Plunket Volunteer Committee supported me so much and I wanted to give something in return. Volunteering is a great way of making friends, putting people in touch with each other, supporting and sharing in the Plunket community."

"But there is a misconception around volunteering that it will take up too much of our already busy lives. This is not the case, you can give as much or as little as you want, at a time that suits you. It really is a case of no contribution is too small and everyone - Plunket and families - benefit from your help"

Carol Becker, Plunket New Zealand President said: "It is because of the hard work and the selfless giving of time and skills from our army of volunteers that we are able to support families with young children in so many ways. We really value the work and commitment of these people and I know families around the country appreciate the services they help us provide," she said.

"Without our volunteers many of the services Plunket offers - such as parenting education, car seat rental schemes, toy libraries, parent support groups, playgroups, child safety programmes and helping raise funds to assist with the running of the family centres just wouldn't be possible. Because of that we make an effort to look after those who help us look after others," said Carol

Plunket runs a volunteer education programme recognising the contribution of its volunteers with workshops on how to carry out vital roles and responsibilities with confidence.

If you are interested in getting involved in your local community, gaining new skills and helping Plunket get the best start for every child, contact your local Plunket office or visit www.plunket.org.nz.
