Winner Of
NZ’s Largest Film Competition Announced
It was animation station at this year’s V Energy 48Hours film competition grand final held last night with Dunedin team Line Men taking out the top spot with their film ‘Charlotte’.
With over 12 possible genre’s, the winning team was allocated “THE M NIGHT SHYAMALAN BIG TWIST MOVIE” genre, M Night being a director who carved a career out of films that feature big twists such as “The Sixth Sense”. Along with a must-have genre, teams were required to include a prop (a rock), a character (Alex Puddle, The Exaggerator) and a line of dialogue (“It doesn’t fit”) in their films. Team Line Men’s writer and animator Parry Jones’ film followed character Ron Snook, an assuming man who lured neighbours interests with his “bumps in the night”.
“I did the initial drawing, captured two frames on that and then just drew non-stop for a twelve hour stint, grabbed some sleep then did another eight hour stint,” says Jones.
“There was a stage where I was almost seeing in double-vision, I think I got five hours sleep in the whole weekend but it was 48 hours well worth it!”
An international panel of judges including NZ Director Taika Waititi, Colin Geddes of the Toronoto Film Festival, Livia Bloom from the Museum of Moving Image in New York, Director of South By South West Janet Pierson, journalist Russell Baillie and entertainment reporter Kate Rodger, selected the winning film and the other award recipients. Judges say they knew the film was to be a “highlight of the festival” after the first viewing.
“These guys did a film that was funny, it had a lot of heart and it had a great story with a twist,” said NZ film director, Taika Waititi.
For their efforts, Team Line Men will receive a prize pack (the biggest prize pool of any film competition in NZ) which includes everything you need to make your own film – cash courtesy of Wingnut Films and the NZFC, film hire from Rocket Rentals, a Red One Production Package Zeiss Ultra Prime or Red Pro Prime Lens kit, an O'Connor 2575 Fluid Head, a Ronford Heavy Duty Tall and Low legs, a Hi Hat 150mm, an Arri MB-18 Matte Box plus an Arri FF-4 Follow Focus, a Filter Package, not to mention a Panasonic 17" HD LCD Monitor, $5000 worth of services at Park Road Post, $5000 recording time at York St Studio and a year’s supply of V energy drink plus a 42" Plasma TV!
“This story was
bitter sweet, it was superbly narrated,” comments event
organizer Ant Timpson.
“It’s great to see the south
rising again, those Dunedin guys know how to make good
films. ‘Charlotte’ obviously connected with the
international judges.”
The V Energy 48Hours film competition is New Zealand’s largest filmmaking contest, attracting over 600 teams this year, taking place over a single weekend in six cities with a prize pool worth over $100,000. As in previous years, Peter Jackson selected the wildcard finalists and this year enlisted the help of fellow Hobbit producer, Guillermo Del Toro. This year saw the competition stepping up a level with a ten episode series on C4 showcasing the V Energy 48Hour finalists, culminating in a live broadcast of the Grand Final last night.
