Showing their true colours
Showing their true colours
A fascination with colour has inspired a joint exhibition by Wanganui artists Lorraine Webb and David Traub entitled Chromophilia.
In their tribute to colour, the pair has used paintings and glass to respond to David Batchelor’s book Chromophobia which infers throughout the history of Western art, colour has been considered frivolous, cosmetic and contaminatory in serious art.
Lorraine is Head of Painting at the Quay School of the Arts at Whanganui UCOL. Her exhibition works include five ‘moving’ paintings atop small trolleys that can be moved around the Gallery space and several wall hung ‘still’ paintings.
Lorraine’s paintings illustrate her intrigue at “the endless mystery of colour” with vibrant dots and stripes.
David’s vivid glass sculptures and platters further reinforce the pair’s contention that “colour’s infinite variety, perceptual complexity and beauty can itself be the foundation of serious endeavour”.
The Cromophilia exhibition will continue at the WHMilbank Gallery, Taupo Quay in Wanganui until 30 June.
