Queen of the Whole Universe - A VERY QUEER BEAUTY PAGEANT

Queens in the capital

Wellington audiences were not disappointed when Queen of the Whole Universe 2009 hit the stage last Saturday night for the first time in the capital. An almost capacity crowd were not disappointed when they experienced the over the headgear, boas, glitter, sequins and high camp in the 6th anniversary year.

Miss OZ, Ms Barby Prawne (Owen Anderson) was officially crowned as Queen of the Whole Universe 2009.  Head judge, Wellington Mayor Kerry Prendergast described the evening as most enjoyable and the decision “as a little difficult” as the standard of the five finalists was so high. Miss Japan, Kitty Tammy-Gucci (Andrae Fassler) finished in second place as she did in Auckland last year while Annette Curtain, Miss England (Ed Jenner) attained third place for England. Miss Canada, Wantsa Pocha (Glen Molloy) and Little Afro Bush representing Miss Teen Black America were act two finalists.

Miss Venus, Venerea (Evan Donnelly-Yarr) picked up Miss MSD Beauty with a Purpose for her humorous answer to rid the world of crocs when asked the question ‘If you won QWU 2009 how would you use your beauty to better the world’. Mr Butch 2009 was awarded to James Bondage (Nemo) while Miss Zambia, Victoria Falls (Alan Parata) and her incredible wheelchair picked up the Miss Durex Pleasuremax award.

Since the shows inception in 2004 QWU has donated over $140,000.00 to HIV/AIDS Charities in New Zealand. Due to slightly lower ticket sales than normal, the cost of transporting the show to Auckland and the Gold Sponsor, Team Maddison, going into receivership owing money to the show, QWU was not in a position to donate any profits to the three chosen charities; New Zealand AIDS Foundation, Positive Women and Body Positive.

The Queen of the Whole Universe organizers extends their many thanks to the cast and crew for their support, energy, dedication and commitment to the show.

Special thanks to the many sponsors involved; without their financial and product/services support we would not be able to create this show and transport it to Wellington.
