Winter Games At Lake Wanaka

LAKE WANAKA, New Zealand (July 2, 2009) – New Zealand’s Governor-General and the Prime Minister will both attend 100% Pure New Zealand Winter Games as guests of honour at the inaugural Games which take place in Queenstown, Lake Wanaka, Naseby and Dunedin from 21-30 August 2009.

Governor-General Hon Sir Anand Satyanand will officially open 100% Pure New Zealand Winter Games on Friday 21 August at the downtown Queenstown ceremony that will feature extreme sports action as well as a welcome by Otago and Southland Ngai Tahu representatives.

The Games will close with a spectacular ceremony at which Prime Minister Hon John Key will officially close this ground-breaking event, along with an unforgettable display of aerial skiing and snowboarding, in front of over 5,000 spectators and a live TV audience at Queenstown’s Coronet Peak on Sunday 30 August.

“We are honoured to have such distinguished guests open and close the Games and their involvement highlights the importance of 100% Pure New Zealand Winter Games, both economically and socially, to New Zealand as a nation,” said Winter Games NZ CEO, Arthur Klap. “In August, New Zealand will host the world’s top snow sports athleteῳ and their sporting achievements, together with our atractiveness as a winter destination will be beamed into living rooms around the globe.

100% Pure New Zealand Winter Games is the largest snow sports event in the Southern Hemisphere and the only event of its kind outside of the Winter Olympics. It will take place at Coronet Peak, The Remarkables, Cardrona Alpine Resort, Snow Farm, Naseby and Dunedin from 21-30 August 2009. It will feature disciplines of alpine skiing, free skiing, x-country skiing, snowboarding, curling, figure skating and adaptive snow sports as well as the demonstration sports of winter triathlon and natural luge.
