Silver For Olympic Javelin Thrower Farquhar

2008 Beijing Olympian and New Zealand National Javelin Champion Stuart Farquhar has won silver at the World University Games event in Belgrade.

Farquhar who is currently studying Sports Science at the Waikato Institute of Technology finished second behind 2008 Olympic Silver medallist Latvian Ainars Kovals who’s second round throw of 81.58m was enough to beat Farquhar into silver who had a best throw of 79.48m.

Asian Games champion and former World Junior Championship medallist Jae Myoung Park from South Korea rounded out the medals with a throw of 79.29m.

Farquhar like many others is using the World University Games event in Belgrade as preparation for the upcoming IAAF World Championships to be held in Berlin next month.

Out of the top five placing getters in the men’s javelin event four of the competitors represented their country at the 2008 Beijing Olympics giving even more substance to Farquhar’s performance at this tough international event.

Farquhar’s silver medal was one of three medals at the tack on Friday night as New Zealand team captain Monique Williams took out gold in the women’s 200m final and Andrea Miller overcame a back injury to take bronze in the 100m hurdles.

The New Zealand delegation which consisted of just twenty-two athletes caught the attention of the organisers and other competing nations with their medal winning ways.

The team finished with a medal tally of four; one gold, two silver and one bronze including Brent Newdick’s silver in the men’s decathlon on Thursday evening.
