The IMNZ Board for 2009/2010 has been elected; the team helming Independent Music New Zealand for the next year is Mark Kneebone (Chair – Tardus Music), Ben Howe (Deputy Chair – Arch Hill Recordings), Callum August (Dirty Records), Dean Cameron (ElevenFiftyseven Records), Sarah Crowe (The Black Seeds Ltd), Jonathan Hughes (Mana Music), Joost Langeveld (Reliable Recordings) and Scott Muir (Dunedinmusic.com). We have a lot of exciting new projects in the pipeline so it will be a busy year for the team. We’d like to say thank you very much to Andrew Maitai for his hard work and dedication to the Board for the past two years, and thanks to Joost for his excellent Deputy Chair skills of the last couple of years as well. And a massive thank you to Bernie Griffen who steps down from the Board after being with IMNZ since the very beginning back in 2001; his contribution has been invaluable and his efforts have helped IMNZ become an integral part of the New Zealand music landscape.

APRA have announced the top 20 songs in line for the 2009 Silver Scroll Award which is to be held in Christchurch on Thursday September 17. Nesian Mystik's new single RSVP entered the top ten singles chart, making it the fourth consecutive top ten single from the album 'Elevator Musiq'. RSVP also makes it 10 Top 10 entries from 11 chart appearances, which cements their place as the local act with the most Top 10 hits in New Zealand music history – more than even Split Enz, John Rowles, Crowded House, The Feelers, The Exponents, Herbs or Shihad. Move The Crowd Records (MTC) have confirmed the signing of their new kids, Kidz In Space, and released a taster with the track Ocean Of Drugs; an as-yet unnamed EP has been set for release on August 24.

Oikos Music is launching the first of several values-based, non-genre online songwriting competitions. The competition aims to support an increased awareness of humanitarian and charitable causes through awarding the positive influence of songwriting with an emphasis on inspiration, encouragement and empowerment rather than on music genre. The first online songwriting competition ‘Peace Song’ will launch on August 1 2009 and will coincide with the Amnesty International NZ launch of Freedom Week on August 3rd with a focus on celebrating New Zealand's "freedom of expression". And in support of the World March for Peace and the Youth Peace Song competition, Yulia made her song The War available as a free download for one week in June; she recorded the song as a student at Cashmere High School. International Activity

Pacific Curls are in Canada this month and next; one of their main stops is at the Winnipeg Folk Festival where other artists performing include Elvis Costello, Neko Case, Arlo Guthrie and Burning Spear. They have six festivals booked while they’re there plus will play several of their own shows; you can check out dates and places pacificcurls.com. In May Shapeshifter completed a hugely successful UK and European tour; highlights included performing to thousands of screaming fans at London’s Forum to being a headline act at Bristol and Nottingham’s Dot To Dot festival. And in big news for fans, they’ve announced that their new album will be out on October 12 this year. Pacific Heights - aka Devin Abrams of Shapeshifter - has just signed his album ‘In A Quiet Storm’ to Wonderful Noise in Japan.

Having just returned from their White Horse single release tour in the UK, Die!Die!Die! are set to hit the road again, this time back home in New Zealand. Playing five dates throughout the country, Die!Die!Die! will be heading to Christchurch, Methven, Dunedin, Wellington and Hamilton before heading back into the studio for record a new album due to be released later this year. While in the UK, the band appeared at festivals such as the Stag and Dagger, Great Escape and the Camden Crawl in London. NME Magazine noted Die!Die!Die! as the highlight of Great Escape, while fans had to queue around the block for over half an hour to catch a glimpse of them headlining the Artrocker stage at the Camden Crawl. London fans also had a chance to catch the group at Cargo if they could grab tickets before they sold out. On their way to perform in Newcastle, an unfortunate misunderstanding lead to the band's tour van being seized by police in Leeds - a plea for help was posted by the band on the internet - fans came through, and not only did the band make it to the gig and get their van returned, but the story was picked up by NME.com, and lead to the Die!Die!Die! single Sideways getting radio play on BBC2 after the story broke.

Leila Adu appeared at the launch of Brooklyn’s URB ALT 09 on June 20; and she guested with Otto Fischer and MuthaWit during their festival slots. If you live in Australia, look out for Don McGlashan passing through to perform songs from his second solo album 'Marvellous Year', along with highlights from his career to date. Although no stranger to Australian audiences (Don's toured with The Front Lawn, The Muttonbirds - as heard on Triple J's Hottest 100 - and as a guest musician with Crowded House) this will be Don's first performance under his own name. He plays Melbourne on July 16 and Sydney on July 18; 'Marvellous Year' is out in Australia on Good Red/Shock Records on July 17th. And The Datsuns have 8 this month dates across the US and Canada, with 2 European shows thrown in for good measure.

New Releases

Rhythmethod are stoked to deliver to you ‘The Devil Makes Work For Idle Hands’ – 20 of the best from one of New Zealand’s most legendarily low down, dirty, stanky rock groups ever – ladies and gentlemen, Head Like A Hole. Hailing from Wellington, they exploded onto the NZ scene in the early 90s thanks to incendiary live performances and as part of a wave of Kiwi rockers such as Shihad, many of whom were on Murray Cammick’s famed Wildside label. HLAH released 5 albums in their time together, and were just about to embark on a national reunion tour when Booga had a run-in with an axe; however the shows have been rescheduled for September - with Booga, Nigel and Andrew from the original lineup, and Mike Franklin-Browne helping out, the spirit of the group remains strong.

Louie Knuxx has been a busy man since deporting himself to Australia. His latest EP, ‘Drinkin Druggin Fighting Fukkin’ is out on July 20 and includes features by Jay Roacher, Kid Sheelan, DTD, a remix by Yorel, and two new songs from the forthcoming Cancer album. He’s also teamed up with JJ Peters (ex- I Killed the Prom Queen) aka Deez Nuts to bring us ‘Grips and Tonics’ - JJ & Louie may have come from different musical backgrounds but their desire to succeed has brought them together - not to mention their dislike for authority figures and penchant for partying until the wheels fall off, and ‘Grips and Tonics’ results, with 10 tracks of lyrical mayhem. Also from the Breakin Wreckwordz whanau, keep an eye out for brand new albums from RES, Jay Roacher, Tyson Tyler and the Usual Suspects.

What is the relevance of a concept album in today’s climate of multi-media and rapid information exchanges one might ask? It’s possible that Dylan Storey’s new album ‘Out of the Soup’ might shed some light on this question, as it takes you on a journey through the history of human thought and the fate of mankind, as seen through the eyes of a New Zealand armchair philosopher. Just as seemingly inhospitable conditions on Earth 4 billion years ago facilitated the emergence of life from the ‘primordial soup’, ‘Out of the Soup’ evolved of natural, physical processes. “When I was young my grandfather told me stories about being in the New Zealand troupes on Crete when the Germans invaded” says Storey. “The skies above Crete were full of German parachutes as far as the eye could see. That war ended up being finished by the newly invented atomic bomb. New Zealand scientist Ernest Rutherford’s idea of splitting an atom had been further developed by theoretical physicist Albert Einstein, although it terrified him, to create a destructive force that could destroy life on the planet. Could this have been the point where humans out-stepped the bounds of natural selection to become masters of our own destiny?” With its uniquely New Zealand sound, and a style that ranges from laid back progressive alternative country to psychedelic jam rock, ’Out of the Soup’ may not answer any questions, but it will provide a musical background to ponder them by; and Storey is taking his thoughts throughout the nation this month so you can hear them for yourself.

Piano and drum special ops taskforce the Murderchord was formed in May 2008 by 2 drummers from 2 punk rock bands – Dave (Missing Teeth) and Ryan (Real Real Sick). So far the Murderchord has buzzed out crowds in lounges, garages, driveways, roller skating rinks, backs of moving (sure, and stationary) trucks. ‘The Blunt Cut’ is the pair’s debut release, a mini-album recorded at The Dank (Puppy Killer Records’ HQ) and released by Puppy Killer Records (Missing Teeth, Poisoners, Suicide Dogs), via Rhythmethod. Watch out for the street-sale only EP ‘What The F%#K Did You Expect For Free, Little CD?’ for sale at gigs too. Concept: Canada’s prolific neo-doom duo Nadja meets New Zealand’s pitch black droners Black Boned Angel. The idea for this inspired collaboration – sure to appeal to fans of Sunn O))) and Oren Ambarchi – was first hatched in conversations between 20BuckSpin and Nadja’s Aidan Baker back in 2006. These two 20+ minute instrumental tracks have a less accessible vibe than the previously released track Christ Send Light; simply entitled I and II, they are comprised in equal parts of Nadja’s fuzzed-out, lurching, hazy dream-doom, and Black Boned Angel’s razor-sharp, metallic riff-shards.

Stevie Starr began his musical debut at 21 performing folk music at the Jazz Blues Club in Hamilton, and after the performance the bar owner suggested he change his name from Steve Nicoll to Stevie Starr. Starr then travelled throughout Europe, returning to New Zealand in 2003, and was introduced to the ideas of Estonian composer Arvo Pärt; inspired and with new direction, Starr teamed up with old band mate the Superfly to write string and piano "mirrored" compositions in an isolated log cabin in the Horowhenua forest. Now the fruits of Starr’s labour come to light through his debut album ‘We Hope In All Things New’, described in the recent NZ Herald (Watch This Space segment) as “Lending classical compositions with sweeping pop movements, Wellington's Stevie Starr could well be one of the brightest new things on the New Zealand music scene”.

Minuit’s new album ‘Find Me Before I Die A Lonely Death dot com’ is out on Monday 20 July through Tardus Music; the band teamed up with UK producer Andy Chatterley to hone a sound for first single and album opener Wayho. (Chatterley also has sessions for Kanye West and remixes for Blondie, Muse and Peter, Bjorn & John under his belt). Like any good live band, you need to hear it AND see it to truly get it (The Crystal Method rated Minuit's set in the Big Day Out Boiler Room as the highlight of their day). While you're more likely to have seen Minuit play a club in Berlin recently than in New Zealand (or in far flung venues in places such as St Petersburg, Czech Republic, The Crystal Method's DJ night in Los Angeles, playing the hotel where Tarantino wrote Pulp Fiction in Amsterdam, or headlining the recent Hanoi International Music Festival in Vietnam...the list goes on), they recently did a wee tour and will be playing more shows soon to celebrate the album, so keep your eyes peeled for dates.

Sunley’s ‘Apologies’ is due for release on July 25th and dunedinmusic.com are having a good old fashioned party down in Dunedin, with a national tour to follow in September. There’s something mournful about Sunley’s music - even when it jumps up on a table and kicks your drink over, you’re mesmerised by the odd gravity of it. Evan Sunley James is a veteran of bNet radio and the dark worlds of bartending and sound engineering who now produces award winning computer games. ‘Apologies’ was self-produced and largely self-performed, with the help of a few of Dunedin’s finest – many of whom weigh in to form the Sunley Band for live performances. This Sunley Band will be coming to a town near you soon, but for now you’re invited to sit back and enjoy the sound. Tiki’s brand new remix album ‘Flux’ takes his critically acclaimed debut album ‘Past, Present, Future’ to another level, featuring remixes of tracks from the multi-platinum seller by some of Tiki’s favourite producers. Remixers include Pacific Heights, State Of Mind, Antiform, Pitch Black, Sambora, Overproof Sound System, DJ Digital, Mosus & Zero T, Trei, Oogun and more; and to celebrate, Tiki will be playing special shows featuring an acoustic set, before dropping the big tunes with good friend DJ Sambora (Shapeshifter), so check tikidub.com for details.

Recorded live at Nic McGowan’s Island Bay Studios, Good Laika’s new album ‘Followed By A Trail Of Sparks’ blends indie rock, soul and folk influences into an aural adventure that is exemplified by first single All’s Well (Summer Song), which reached #3 on the national Alt Airplay Chart, with second single Twelve O’Something beginning to make a similar impression. The live recordings will come alive in front of audiences at the upcoming album release shows at the Monte Cristo Room in AK on Fri 10 July and the San Francisco Bath House in Welli on Thu 16 July. Good Laika formed 7 years ago in Wellington and their debut ‘Heads I Win, Tails You Lose’ was a slow-burning success.

Brother Love has returned with a new album, 'The Gospel According To…’ Beginning in 1993 as a solo project of songwriter Martin Henderson (of Space Dust and the Axel Grinders), previous albums received widespread distribution through Forced Exposure and Drag City among others. In 1996 the group first toured the US, playing San Francisco, Minneapolis and New York (the Knitting Factory) among other places, sharing bills with US artists including Barbara Manning, Bardo Pond, Bloodloss, Tono-Bungay and the No Neck Blues Band. Phil Lambert escaped from the Zombies Of The Stratoshere, spent some time as a Terror Of Tinytown and a Nice Nazi before forming a Rebel Truce with a local Suburban Reptile called Tony Baldock, and together they formed the nucleus of the Lost Universe. Next they recruited Tony Waerea, a celestial sax blower from the outer extremities of the Parisian Galaxy where the Dead Can Dance. All that was required now was a frontman and all round entertainer who could help create new spheres to exist within their Lost Universe - beam down Julian Hansen, guitarist, vocalist and songwriter who has had past glories in the Spelling Mistakes. If you’re a fan of old school New Zealand punk/pop like the Spelling Mistakes, Suburban Reptiles, Toy Love, The Androidss and Otis Mace, you need to take a voyage and discover the Lost Universe.

James Duncan's duet with Bachelorette, My New Flumes, has been unleashed to radio - racing ahead of the 'Hello–Fi' full–length album (scheduled for August 3) like Usain Bolt on the lam. But wait…there's more. Sean Grattan (the man who got a wrestler in a twist for SJD's Black Is A Beautiful Colour and made the Mint Chicks yet spazzier with his clip for If My Arm Was A Mike Stand) has made an eye–poppingly brilliant vid for My New Flumes, which you can check in the 'Vision' pod of the Round Trip Mars website roundtripmars.com.

On the Road

King Kapisi heads out on tour with his band throughout July and August in the lead-up to the release of his fourth album ‘Hip Hop Lives Here’ which is due out in September. Kapisi aka Bill Urale will road test new material from the upcoming album, including the first radio single Stand which features the conscious lyrics of Jamaican artist Luciano. The feel-good video for Stand has a ‘Wellington represents’ theme to it and includes members of Urale’s family, friends plus an appearance by Hurricane and All Black Ma’a Nonu. Urale has maintained a busy schedule since the release of his last album, 2005’s ‘Dominant Species’, including performing overseas, songwriting collaborations with international artists, developing his Overstayer Clothing label, working with Adidas international and the All Blacks to help create the music for a global rugby campaign and even writing songs for a future reggae album under the name Mr Majesty. King Kapisi will be joined on tour by a full 6-piece live band, and will be supported by local guest emcees Tha Feelstyle, Maitreya and UK artist Scalper, a former member of British group Fun-da-mental.

Get into your glad rags and make your way to the Auckland Town Hall on August 8 as Eru Dangerspiel are coming to refine and liberate your Saturday evening with ‘Great News For The Modern Man’. Eru Dangerspiel are a 16-piece group led by former TrinityRoots drummer and master percussionist Riki Gooch; joining Riki on stage will be multi-instrumentalist/composer Jonathan Crayford (in his last New Zealand performance before relocating to Paris), Whirimako Black, Anna Coddington, Laughton Kora (Kora), Isaac Aesili (Solaa, Opensouls), Chip Matthews and Julien Dyne (both Opensouls), Mara TK (Electric Wire Hustle, Fly My Pretties), Parks (Ladi 6), Ned Ngatae (Dimmer), Mike Fabulous (The Black Seeds, Fly My Pretties), Joe Lindsay, Toby Laing (both Fat Freddy’s Drop), Lewis McCallum, Olga Gryniewicz, Submariner (Che Fu, Feelstyle, Dimmer, The Turnaround), Patrick Pihama (Riki’s uncle) and Ross Burge (The Muttonbirds), with more expected to surface on the night. And Concord Dawn are returning from their international travels for a rare New Zealand tour this July and August; it’s pretty extensive so there’s a good chance that they’ll be coming to a venue near you.

Ladi6 is coming to warm up your winter and perform the energetic off the hook live performances she is known and loved for; joining her in heating things up are Recloose and Julien Dyne. Ladi6 alongside beatsmith and vocalist Parks have just returned from touring throughout Australia; and they’ve been getting busy in the studio preparing some special new treats for this tour. Currently on a US tour, 2008 NZ Music Award recipient Recloose will return to his new home of Aotearoa to perform his one of his legendary DJ sets which this year he has also toured through China, Singapore and Australia. Julien Dyne will be performing tracks from his recently-released debut album ‘Pins & Digits’ and will be accompanied on stage by the soul vocals of Parks. David Kilgour and the Heavy Eights play their first show in Dunedin for over two years on July 16, having been kept busy with Australian and US tours and the recording of the new LP with Sam Hunt, ‘Falling Debris’. Sam's show at the Festival of Arts last year sold out, and since then he has been busy with his new book Doubtless and opening for Leonard Cohen on his NZ tour.

Tainted are set to return to Whangarei for a one-off show at The Zone Bar on August 7th; joining are locals Septiside plus Anabyss and Every Man For Himself (Auckland); this will be the last show at the Zone Bar for a couple of months, so you might want to get there early to ensure entry.

Charlie ASH, the Auckland-based quartet known for their synthy indie-pop sounds and spectacular live shows, and Knives At Noon, whose captivating electro-pop is currently exciting reviewers, are playing a New Zealand show somewhere near you this winter. Charlie ASH are fresh from a five-week tour of the UK and Europe: they headed off in mid-May, playing to packed-out venues at the Great Escape festival (the SXSW of Europe) in Brighton and even gracing the cover of the festival programme. They also squeezed in Cardiff, Liverpool (at the SoundCity festival) and Berlin gigs – as well as a sold-out show supporting Ladyhawke at Koko in London and an Amsterdam show alongside fellow Kiwis, the legendary Bats. C.ASH are planning to work with Steve Lyon (producer of The Cure and Depeche Mode) on future recordings - for the moment, though, they’re excited to be heading out for some shows round the country. Up-and coming Dunedin-based band Knives At Noon toured the North Island in January to promote their well-reviewed 2nd EP, which was mixed by Dale Cotton (HDU, Dimmer, Die! Die! Die!); and they’ve been playing with everyone from the Checks to Clap Clap Riot to the Tutts and receiving heaps of attention for their MySpace ‘remix’ project. Catch the two bands, with support acts, at a main centre near you – the first 50 people through the door get a free Jack Daniel’s premix.

The Raggamuffin Children and the Eastern are teaming up for a very short tour commencing on July 11 (short because they aren't very fond of the winter, and prefer to sit by the fire reading books and drinking hot chocolate). Not all of the dates are confirmed yet so keep an eye on Ragamuffin Children’s MySpace page for further shows In New Plymoth, Titahi Bay and perhaps Picton. The Eastern, hailing from Lytleton, recently released their debut self-titled album after playing over 270 shows, including concerts with US country rebel Steve Earle and Old Crowe Medicine Show. Ragamuffin Children liken their sound to something written in a graveyard whilst holding a tea party and singing nursery rhymes; they’ve been charming audiences around New Zealand and Europe with their eerily lilting, handmade folk songs; they released their album 'The Seahorse Emporium' in February. From August 22 Tahuna Breaks will travel from Opononi to Queenstown in support of their upcoming album ‘Black Brown and White’ and the release of the single of the same name. Recorded in December 2008 with Dr Lee Prebble at the Surgery Studio in Wellington, ‘Black Brown and White’ is due for release on August 31.

Auckland band Panther and the Zoo are pleased to announce their first New Zealand tour at the end of July - while the band are in the midst of recording their debut album, the Zoo have decided to don the warmest clothing or animal suits at hand and venture across our fair land, with their new songs in tow. Their single I Know Your Name battled with The Mint Chicks for weeks in the 95bFM top ten before conquering the prized #1 slot, while their live act is fast gaining a reputation of its own, with support slots for the Phoenix Foundation and Liam Finn. The touring zoo is a compact three piece unit, comprising of Graham Panther (Phony Bone), Hayden East (ex Brunettes, Cosbys), and Alistair Deverick (The Shades, Hot Grits). Connan Mockasin and Lawrence Arabia have just announced that they’re having a baby with Liam Finn and Eliza Jane – the baby being a mighty concert at Auckland’s Powerstation on August 29.

Miriam Clancy is pleased to announce her 22 date Lo-Fi nationwide tour to celebrate the release of her new single When I Do which is the first single from her upcoming second album ‘Magnetic’ due for release later this year. With both guitars and the Wurlitzer stashed in the boot, Miriam will visit many of New Zealand’s smaller towns and the outlying venues of our cities. Since her first album ‘Lucky One’, Miriam has spent 2 years travelling, writing and recording songs for ‘Magnetic’ both in New Zealand and America. She has opened for Ron Sexsmith and Wilco and has been described as “New Zealand's answer to Martha Wainwright” (Waikato Times).

And skiers will delight – Mel Parsons is hitting the road again this August, warming up winter in the South Island with sweet songs and mulled wine. The Rhythm Kings joining Parsons on her mid-winter jaunt are guitarist and slide player Neil Watson (Anika Moa, Finn Brothers) and bassist Aaron Stewart. Stopping off in Wanaka, Ohau, Christchurch, Oamaru and Methven, the Southern Winter Warmer Tour follows the success of Parsons’ debut album, ‘Over My Shoulder’, and the July release of her first music video, Darlin Darlin, produced and directed by Murray Keane (Outrageous Fortune, Shortland Street) and co-starring actor Arthur Meek.
