Looking for creativity and couture
New Zealand’s emerging designers and artists can now submit entries for the Villa Maria Cult-Couture Awards 2009.
Now in its eighth year, the prestigious awards return this year as part of the Manukau Festival of Arts 2009, and are open to fashion students and graduates, emerging and established designers and artists from Manukau and throughout New Zealand.
Garments entered should demonstrate a unique New Zealand interpretation and explore the limits of haute couture, design and artistry, says Leisa Siteine, Manager, Manukau Arts.
“Cult-Couture is a great springboard for designers to get their garments professionally modelled on the catwalk as part of a spectacular show.
“Also, the prize money offered by our sponsors and the council is a great incentive for talented designers and artists to continue their practice and keep aiming for higher achievement.” The event’s six design categories offer prize money of more than $15,000.
The six categories are: Recycled Revolution, Formally Yours, Obviously Organic, Flight of Fantasy, Matrimonial Bliss and On the Streets, plus a special award to recognise creative excellence from Manukau designers.
The judges will be looking for one-off garments that convey originality, creativity and innovation.
“Last year’s winning design by Visesio ‘Louis’ Thomsen has raised the bar for designers to demonstrate a unique New Zealand interpretation,” says Ms Siteine.
Manurewa designer Visesio ‘Louis’ Thomsen was a triple winner last year. His garment, Le Tatau Bride, won the Matrimonial Bliss category, while his additional design, Futuristic Island Princess, won the Manukau Designer Award.
Designers can register their interest by 7 August and must complete their garment entries by 12 September.
