Stunning Pacific Musical Like No Other!

An evocative fusion of gospel, opera, pop and hip hop combined with Pacific "street appeal" choreography will rock Porirua's Te Rauparaha Arena next week with the staging of Malaga – The Journey.

Composed and directed by Igelese Ete (Lord of the Rings), and choregraphed by Trey Salanoa, this colourful stage performance will astound audiences from every ethnic background and leave a lasting impression on the local community.

Malaga has traversed Aotearoa and the Pacific to rave reviews over the past 10 years.
This show, which will run from 4 – 6 August, has been adapted featuring over 100 young people from Bishop Viard, Aotea, Mana and Porirua colleges the Porirua region.
"Porirua is overflowing with talent," says Igelese Ete, Creative New Zealand’s recent winner of the Senior Pacific Artist Award.

"Porirua is renowned for its barbershop achievement across the world and it shows! Working with these young people over the past three months has been phenomenal. They are animated, expressive and focussed and have an ability to convey the narrative of the work in a way that is way beyond their years."

Porirua Mayor Jenny Brash says if people have a free night next week, they should definitely get to one of the shows.

"It's wonderful that our young people are able to express their talents in a show of the calibre of Malaga. And they are fortunate to be learning from such accomplished artists like Igelese Ete and Trey Salanoa – lessons and memories I am sure they will keep throughout their lives."

Malaga depicts the journey of a people from their ‘Hawai’iki, (their homeland) to Aotearoa, says Jakki Leota-Ete, the productions co-creator.
"Malaga is a deeply moving spiritual journey. Navigating through Colonial histories and tropes, it takes you on a voyage of discovery. But it's also modern and expressive and should definitely not be missed."
