Funding For 2010 Waitangi Day Activities

Funding For 2010 Waitangi Day Activities

Applications for funding to commemorate Waitangi Day are now being accepted, the Ministry for Culture and Heritage announced today.

The Commemorating Waitangi Day Fund supports events that celebrate New Zealand’s identity by commemorating the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi and promoting stronger national and community ties.

“The Treaty of Waitangi has a central place in our understanding of our nation’s history. Waitangi Day is a time for reflection, but is also a time for participation and celebration of our nationhood for all New Zealanders,” said Brodie Stubbs, Manager of Heritage Operations.

“While the grants given in previous years were relatively small, averaging about $3,000, they have made a wide range of cultural activities possible that provide communities with an enriching experience on Waitangi Day,” said Mr Stubbs.

“Projects run in partnership between local authorities, community groups and tangata whenua are particularly encouraged,” he said.

The Fund closes to applications for funding at 5pm on 11 September 2009. The fund is administered by the Ministry for Culture and Heritage, PO Box 5364, Wellington.
