On Media7 This Week
Media7 Wednesday 12th August
“Age is foolish and forgetful when it underestimates youth” wrote J.K. Rowling in “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince”.
In this week’s Media7 Russell Brown is looking at how poorly New Zealand Youth is depicted in the media, portrayed by politicians and constantly castigated by talk-back radio demagogues and social commentators.
It’s a depressing picture that the media paints… a lurid landscape where teen pregnancy, violence, text bullying, juvenile drinking, drug and solvent abuse run rife as boy (and girl) racers, graffiti vandals, truants and a host of other little villains inflict themselves on society.
But are things really that bad, or is it more a case of lazy journalists letting parents, teachers, politicians and policemen beat up on young people for their own ends?
We have two separate panels of young people joining Russell Brown to ponder these issues.
Eva Maria (author of “You Shut Up”), Zachery Dorner (Leader of the Young Greens) and Tai Ahu (who’s studying law, history and the Maori language will be giving us their perspective.
Then, Imogen Neale (The Manukau Courier), John Hartevelt (The Press – Qantas Award Junior Feature writer) and Jehan Casinader (Youth Affairs Commentator for TVNZ “Good Morning” will provide an insiders’ take youth issues in the media.
Also in this week’s show Simon Pound reports how talented young film makers are at odds over the merits the short film versus the digital feature.
This comes as the NZ Film Commission undergoes a major review by Peter Jackson and David Court.
Both genres must compete for scarce funds and both forms have their passionate proponents who will be joining Russell Brown on our film panel.
Digital feature promoter, Ant Timpson; film maker, Nik Beachman and “NZ on Film” Editor, Nick Grant will explain their very different visions of our film future.
