Burton Pro Riders Experience Golfing At Jacks Point
International and Kiwi pro snowboarders including US Olympic gold medalist Kelly Clark abandoned the snow and tested their skills at Jacks Point’s 18 hole championship golf course this week, as part of a Burton Experience competition, that is the focus of a television programme screening shortly on TV1 and Sky networks.
The Burton Experience is a promotion co-ordinated by Juice TV and The Edge radio station, involving the winner Jimmy Mathews and three friends, in a day out in Queenstown with top Burton riders, who are currently in the area competing in the Burton NZ Open and the Winter Games.
Along with Clark the international riders included Canadians Charles Reid and Spencer O’Brian, Marko Grilc from Slovenia and top New Zealanders Shelley Gotlieb, recently named Snowboarder of the Year, Robett Hollis, Nick Brown and Tim Jackways.
Juice TV and a Christchurch production company filmed the “experience” which is presented by celebrity television personality Hayley Holt. The day began with breakfast at Joe’s Garage in Queenstown followed by a luge competition at the top of the Skyline Gondola and a snowboarding style bungy jump from The Ledge, before jet boating to Jacks Point with Kawarau Jet.
Jacks Point Golf Operations Manager Ben Lynch says it was a novel way to travel to the course and once the group arrived at Jacks Point they formed teams to create their own golf competition.
“They were all blown away with the course and the whole environment at Jacks Point. They couldn’t believe how spectacular it was and some of them will certainly be back. In fact Kelly Clark suggested we do a swap - she would take me boarding at The Remarkables if I would take her golfing at Jacks Point!”
Burton NZ Managing Director Guy Alty claimed the sixth hole, with its views over Lake Wakatipu and mountain backdrop, was the most scenic he had ever played.
The pro riders and their guests lunched at The Jacks Point Restaurant before riding by jet boat back to Queenstown. They sampled food from the new dinner menu that will be introduced at Jacks Point Restaurant from Labour Weekend.
“From the feedback we received the whole team was pretty excited about their golfing experience at our course,” says Lynch. “We are certainly looking forward to seeing the two one hour television programmes which will undoubtedly provide some excellent exposure for golf at Jacks Point.”
