A Need For Speed
Speed freaks take note - NZ On Screen has today added a speed-themed collection of titles to the website.
From muscle-powered freaks of nature (thoroughbred horses, falcons, Peter Snell) to motor mayhem, from Formula 1 legends to front-running design innovation, this collection celebrates the particularly Kiwi 'need for speed'.
The Speed collection includes the documentaries Britten - Backyard Visionary, about the late motorcycle designer John Britten; Trio at the Top, about Kiwi motor racing legends Bruce McLaren, Denny Hulme and Chris Amon; and Circuits of Gold , about bike racer Ivan Mauger.
The collection also includes excerpts from the movies The World’s Fastest Indian (the Burt Munro story) and mini-madness of Goodbye Pork Pie, and the full-length version of the documentary feature Kaikohe Demolition.
And acknowledging that it isn’t only cars and bikes that go fast in New Zealand, the collection also includes a 1964 National Film Unit documentary Peter Snell - Athlete, and vintage NFU titles on speed-boating and horse-racing.
Covering distance in the shortest amount of time has long captured our imagination and the collection is framed by written pieces from broadcaster and motor-racing nut Robert Rakete and sports TV veteran Geoff Bryan.
NZ On Screen Project Director Brenda Leeuwenberg noted that Britten - Backyard Visionary, Trio at the Top, Circuits of Gold, and Peter Snell - Athlete were already some of the most visited titles on the website, so she was expecting the Speed collection to be a very popular one. “These documentaries feature legendary and much loved New Zealanders, so that is an attraction, but there’s also just that basic Kiwi fascination with going fast that the collection taps into into - it’s in our DNA!”
Funded by NZ On Air, NZ On Screen was set up late last year to showcase New Zealand television and film. The Speed collection, and over 500 other television and film titles, are all available to view free on www.nzonscreen.com
