Take quiz on mobile use while behind the wheel

Take quiz on mobile phone use while behind the wheel

The Automobile Association has launched an online quiz enabling drivers to test their road safety knowledge around the use of hand-held mobile phones while driving.

AA General Manager Motoring Affairs, Mike Noon, says the quiz consists of 10 statements that require a true or false answer, and is purely for respondents to test their skills on mobile phone use.

“The quiz statements are based on extensive research into the use of hand-held mobile phones by drivers and some answers may surprise respondents,” says Mr Noon.

Quiz respondents receive an explanation for the right answer regardless of whether they get the question right or wrong. On completion of the quiz a score out of 10 is given, along with the length of time it took to complete the quiz and a corresponding traffic light colour indicating proficiency.

“The AA wants the Government to introduce a national advertising campaign educating motorists so they choose not to use their hand-held mobile phone while driving because they understand that it is dangerous, rather than because it risks incurring an $80 fine and 20 demerit points,” says Mr Noon.

“The AA would like all drivers not to wait until November before changing their behaviour. We should all turn off our hand-held mobile phones now and change the voicemail so that callers know that their call will be returned once we reach their destination or take a break from driving.”

“Parents can take action now too and make it an absolute rule that their sons and daughters turn off their phones while driving so that there is no talking, and absolutely no texting or reading of text messages, while they are behind the wheel,” says Mr Noon.

Results from an AA survey showed that 76 percent of Members supported a ban on the use of hand-held mobile phones while driving.

To test your skills, visit the AA’s website or click on the following link www.aa.co.nz/about/issues/Pages/roadsafetyquiz.aspx to take the online quiz.
