Six from UCOL Fine Arts in Wallace finals

Three lecturers from Whanganui UCOL’s Quay School of the Arts have been selected as finalists in the premier Wallace Awards.

They are Head of Sculpture, Brit Bunkley, Senior Lecturer in Art and Design Andrea du Chatenier and Lecturer Matt Couper.
Andrea took one of the top awards in the 2007 Wallace Awards.
Fine Arts student Tom Turner and two former students, John Roy and Ben Pearce, have also been accepted as finalists.

Their work may be included in exhibitions of the work of the finalists to show at the James Wallace Arts Trust gallery in Auckland next month.

An exhibition of winners and selected finalists will also show at the Aotea Centre in Auckland next month, and will travel to TheNewDowse in Lower Hutt for an exhibition open to the public from 17 October – 24 January 2010.

The awards, amounting to more than $150,000, including residencies, will be announced and presented on Monday 7 September at the Aotea Centre.

Acting Head of the Quay School of the Arts Lorraine Webb says the Wallace Awards are amongst New Zealand’s most prestigious. “Places in the finals are fiercely contested. It is a significant achievement that six of our lecturers, students and alumni are amongst those selected.”
