More family fun at Lake Tekapo

Media release from Alpine Springs, Spa and Winter Park

10 September 2009

Get ‘inline’ and roll on in for more family fun at Lake Tekapo

More family fun is coming to one of the South Island’s leading tourist attractions – just in time for school holidays.

Alpine Springs, Spa & Winter Park, located on the shores of Lake Tekapo in the majestic Mt Cook Mackenzie region, will open its rink for a summer season of roller and inline skating from Sunday 27 September.

Two hundred pairs of brand new inline skates are arriving from the United States and a further 300 pairs of roller skates will be available for hire.

The international size ice rink has previously only been open to the public for ice skating, ice hockey and curling as part of Alpine Springs’ Winter Park which includes a state-of-the-art snow tubing slope.  The winter season at the rink closes this Sunday, 13 September.

Alpine Springs director Karl Burtscher says the new summer offering is part of his ongoing development plan.

“The inline/roller rink will complement Alpine Springs’ summer activities - the outdoor hot pools and boutique day spa - and will be converted back to an ice rink at the end of next summer.

“It’s always been our aim to have the rink capable for summer and winter use so that we can deliver a year-round affordable relaxation and recreation package for visitors and locals.

“Ice skating has been hugely popular with all ages, particularly families, couples and groups, and I believe the inline/roller rink will be just as big a drawcard,” he says.

Alpine Springs has launched a new $27 Skate and Soak Combo to encourage visitors to take advantage of the outdoor hot pools and inline/roller rink.

The rink can also be privately hired out for functions like birthday parties and work get-togethers.

The rink’s hours of operation will be the same winter and summer - the day session will run between 10am and 4:30pm and the evening session will begin at 5pm and finish at 9:30pm

Alpine Springs developments still in the pipeline include private hot pools and a cooler pool for summer months.
