New Zealand’s Finest Hit New York In October

Media Release: 10th September 2009

New Zealand’s Finest Hit New York In October

An exciting and eclectic collection of musical acts from Aotearoa will once again grace the stage at this year’s CMJ Music Marathon ‘09 festival in New York. The NZ @ CMJ Showcase is one of CMJ’s opening night events and is a collaboration between NZ On Air and the NZ Music Commission – with the goal being to assist NZ acts to break into the international arena.

Joining them this year is 42BELOW, who as well as funding two of the acts to travel to NYC, are also assisting with promoting and hosting the event. Their involvement will help make the 2009 event bigger than ever, and reinforces 42BELOW’s love of New Zealand music, and its belief in our country’s musical talent.

Making the trek to NYC this year are hip-hop acts Smashproof, Kidz In Space and David Dallas, along with indie-rock groups Die! Die! Die!, Surf City, Motocade, Kingston and Bang Bang Eche.

CMJ Music Marathon is now in its 29th year, and is recognised as one of the key events to break new artists in the music world. It’s track record is stellar – over it’s tenure in New York, the festival has helped the likes of the Beastie Boys, PJ Harvey, Green Day, Arcade Fire, Ben Harper, Run DMC, Eminem, REM, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Foo Fighters and MGMT make a name for themselves. Every year a new of set of acts from CMJ go on to critical and commercial acclaim – a testament to the rigorous screening process the CMJ staff go through to extract the highest quality acts for their “Music Marathon”.

The NZ @ CMJ showcase event began in 2007, and over the past two years acts such as Liam Finn, Cut Off Your Hands, The Checks, The Brunettes, The Ruby Suns, The Naked and Famous and Bang Bang Eche have showcased. In 2007, NME Magazine hailed the NZ@CMJ event as ‘one of the hottest tickets at CMJ’, and last year’s event was no exception.

This year, with the help of 42BELOW and Red Bull, NZ On Air and the NZ Music Commission have expanded the capacity for the event, moving it to the hip Red Bull Space in Manhattan’s trendy Soho district.

The NZ @ CMJ showcase at CMJ Music Marathon happens on 20th October.

Also keep an eye on 42UNHEARD, 42BELOW’s new music competition happening throughout September and October. Amongst other great prizes, the winning band will get a trip to New York to attend CMJ 2010. For more information on 42UNHEARD or to vote, visit www.mtv42unheard.com
