Artist Gray Nicol, who's recent exhibition* at the Archive announced his return to public exhibition after a hiatus of 30 years, will give an illustrated presentation on the carving programme for Tumutumuwhenua, the wharenui at Orakei Marae.
Nicol worked on the carving project from 1978 to 1986. Focusing on what he learnt about both the artistic and the technical aspects of carving and installing large scale sculptures, Nicol will illustrate the progress from raw timber to finished carvings with a range of slides.
The images on display are some of the few that survive as the Marae was severely damaged by fire in 1990. The talk will finished with a Q&A session and the event will last for approximately 60 minutes.
