TURNCOATS
/ NOM*D WINTER 2010
We used to be
good children. And then we grew up and we ran
away.....
For Winter 2010, NOM*d
presents... Turncoats, a journey from innocence to
experience, with a few lessons in non-conformity along the
way.
They started out as paragons of virtue. Modest pinafores and sober suiting are rendered in a God-fearing palette of black, khaki, and virginal white. Bibs and aprons are key shapes for young pilgrims, with the military accents and reworked tailoring that are the hallmarks of NOM*d.
But good children must grow up, and at the heart of
Turncoats is the adolescent rite of passage that leaves no
little girl (or boy) unchanged.
Tie dyed velvet and
brazen flashes of silver remind us that there's more to life
than hoping for Heaven. Worldly delights are referenced in
accents of leather and velvet, adding an unexpected
sensuality to garments worked in wool jersey, sweatshirting
and flowing rayon.
The conflict between conformity and self expression is embodied in leather pieces that literally cage the body, a witty play on the possibility of throwing off what shackles may bind you.
The journey this season is towards self-knowledge and just as knowledge transforms us, so too vintage fabrics and traditional shirting are reworked into dresses and tailoring as the old becomes the new.
This is a wardrobe for visionaries, brave enough to
find their own path.
Being yourself doesn't necessarily
mean being alone in this world. Some of these children grow
up, and make their way back home.
Their rites of passage
enacted, in a blaze of blues and purples, the Turncoats take
their place in a confident new world.
