Kiwi’s love home-grown wine best reveals survey

New Zealanders prefer wine produced on home soil reveals a nationwide ‘Kiwi Wine Habits’ survey commissioned by the Liquorland Top 100.

A whopping 91% of the 1,700 survey respondents said they would chose wine made in New Zealand over wine produced overseas.

However, more than a third (37.4%) of respondents don’t mind what New Zealand region the wine comes from, as long as it tastes good.

Director of the Liquorland Top 100 and well known wine consultant Belinda Jackson, says she is not surprised Kiwis prefer wine grown in New Zealand.

“New Zealand is known internationally for producing top quality wine of all varieties and many of our local wines are sought after by wine lovers and restaurateurs across the globe,” says Belinda.

“In 2008 New Zealand wines took out a high proportion of awards at the Liquorland Top 100 and this year we have again seen a number of top quality local wines entered into the competition.”

The survey also reveals that Sauvignon Blanc is the most popular wine choice, with 87.1% of New Zealanders saying they have tried Sauvignon Blanc. This was closely followed by 86.8% who have tried Chardonnay.

However it seems Kiwis aren’t very adventurous with their wine choices, with only 17.6% of respondents having tried Chenin Blanc and only 22.9% having tried Viognier.

“New Zealanders generally tend to stick to wines they know such as Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay rather than the more exotic varieties,” says Belinda.

“The Liquorland Top 100 includes wines across 20 different wine classes, so it’s a good reason for consumers to branch out and sample a new variety which has received the judges’ endorsement.”

Now in its 16th year, the Liquorland Top 100 is the country’s largest commercial wine competition and this year received 1,487 entries.

Last month 21 leading wine judges spent three days in Marlborough to evaluate the entries, with the task of revealing the 100 top wines commercially available in the New Zealand market, enabling wine drinkers to make a risk-free purchasing decision.

The Top 100 independently endorsed wines will be announced 2 October at an awards evening in Auckland.
