EMBARGOED until 2:00pm Wednesday 30 September 2009

Draft Walking Access Strategy And Codes on Track

Fish & Game welcomes the draft National Strategy for Walking Access released today in Christchurch by the Hon David Carter.

“The draft National Strategy and draft Outdoor Access Code are important milestones on the track towards a completed public access network to, and around lakes and along rivers,” said Bryce Johnson, Chief Executive, New Zealand Fish & Game Council. “Two of the Commission's early priorities are the publication of a code of responsible conduct and the establishment of a national walking access strategy, and the release of the draft documents is applauded.”

“Our next step is to assess how well the Commission has integrated the intentions of the Walking Access Act 2008 on matters of interest to sports fish anglers and gamebird hunters which have been recognised in the act as having priority status under section 11.

“The New Zealand Fish & Game Council congratulates the Walking Access Commission, and its Chair, John Acland, for their work to date, and looks forward to working with the Commission to improve free, certain, enduring and practical access to freshwater fisheries and gamebird hunting opportunities for anglers and hunters.”
